Cherry Mobile’s Trident plagued with problems

(Updated with Cherry Mobile’s response) Just barely 2 weeks from the release of Cherry Mobile’s Trident Q300, reports of numerous problems has started to spread in forums.

In a thread in TipidPC, early adopters of the Cherry Mobile Trident shared their frustrations and problems with the triple-SIM phone.

Issues range from incompatible SIM cards, non-functioning WiFi, to locked phonebook and messages folder.

Sabi sa akin ng store clerk S.O.P. raw nila to test each unit before they release it. BUTI na lang kamo tinest muna namin. Eto ang na-experience ko. Right out of the box, sinalpakan nya ng 3 SIM (SMART sa 1st, PLDT sa 2nd and Globe sa 3rd). May lumalabas na “SIM not ready” prompt. Sa calls, ganun din. Di ako makatawag using SIM slot 3 with the Globe. It turns out pala na bukod sa may problema ang 32K SIMs dito sa phone na ito, pati yung 128K SIMs, sablay din! Grabe! I asked her why. She told me “Sir, minsan kasi pag start nya, nag-hahang sya after nung animated logo”. – rdeveyra

Message me if anyone is interested to buy my bnew q3. Benta ko nalang ng mas mura. Thanks. — rstaana

This time around, I don’t think a bumper case will solve the problems. *jk*

It’s possible the issue could be caused by an unstable software. Hopefully, an update would fix most of those bugs in the phone.

See more of the discussion about the phone here.

Update: The Product Manager of Cherry Mobile just called me to clarify the issue. Apparently, they only recently discovered that the 3rd SIM slot would not accept any SIM that is larger than 32K (i.e. 64k and 128k) which happens with Globe SIMs.

They already have a software fix for this and advised everyone who bought the Trident to visit the Cherry Mobile service centers to have their units updated with the software fix/update. They’ll also send me a review unit this week so I can personally check the phone.

  1. @abeolandres I wonder if you have already tested iPhone 4. What is your reaction to the antenna issues? Are these good reasons to defer?

  3. Wow. Epic fail on their part. Haha, sir abe, fails just like Apple. I was about to say that they should have tested that, because that is typically the first thing an end user would try.

I just hope that software fix will not just make those bars bigger. *wink wink*

  4. Namamahalan pa rin kasi ako kahit pa trisim at “loaded” with features tong phone na to. Cherry Mobile F10 is cheap and feels cheap but I am a cheapskate.LOL All I need from a phone is its call/text/radio capabilities with long battery life. Has to be a dual sim though.

It serves its purpose for me and at a reasonable price.^_^

  5. I just bought my Cherry Mobile Trident Q300 yesterday. I never experience any problem with my Trident up to this time. All features specified are working fine. Before I bought the phone, I really asked the sales clerk to test it first. Luckily I never encountered the problems of other buyers. Or maybe I got an updated unit since it was delivered only last saturday night. Probably all those problems of early buyers were already fixed with my unit.

triple the sim, triple the problem :D

  7. Wow.. that’s really showing of Cherry’s Q.A. procedure.

  8. cherry mobile are bastard pieces of shit! the company, the phones they sell and the people who work for them! they should all burn in hell!

  9. the QA testing only defaults to 2 sims, not 3 sims. that’s why they missed out the 3rd sim.

and why the wifi do not work? The customer paid for it.

  10. I think you’re talking about the topic on TipidCP.

Anyway based on what I have read, flawless naman yung operation ng Trident, Q3, etc. with regards to other features (Wi-Fi, TV, FM, Music Player, Trackpad, etc.).

Ang problem, nasa main feature ng phone. Yung main feature pa. So lumelevel up na ang Cherry Mobile, pati Apple tinatalo.

  12. @Angie,

I think you’re just a CSR of that blistered company. Cherry Mobile sucks big time, so don’t try to put some sophism in your comment, you tool.

  13. @Les Paul
Okay? haha! what’s your proof na employee ako ng Cherry Mobile? I haven’t even tried any of Cherry’s phone.

You’re just one bitter buyer. Don’t blame me for your “oh, i just spent 6.5 grans for that crap” feeling. It’s your fault! What I posted here is already posted at TipidCP. Go see for yourself. Talak ka ng talak.

  14. My brother bought Q300 also and luckily, he didn’t have any problems… now my brother enjoys using his phone with TV, WiFi and Triple Active SIM working =)

    the good side:
    * The phone is light (i thought its heavy because the size looks like Nokia E72)
    * You can surf the net using the default browser or Opera.
    * It has google maps and other java applications
    * The keys are responsive
    * Aside from TV viewing, you can also record your favorite local channels and FM stations (quality depends on signal)
    * Its CHEAP!
    * Battery last long also… good for 3 days
    * Audio jack is generic… (not sure yet)

    the bad side:
    * with bluetooth, wifi, and 3 active sim signals… im afraid that your balls will gonna be fried! hahaha!
    * medyo nakakapanibago yung touch key navigation but you’ll get use to it…
    * you get what you pay for… camera is lame maski may flash… so don’t expect to much!

in the end… if you love this phone… then buy it… if not… then buy it! coz with 3 sim active, wifi, tv, player… it’s definitely a bargain! I’m planning to buy one =)

  15. @Angie

If you’re brave enough, why don’t you post your facebook URL so we can do away with the guessing games?

gaya ng red fox, torque, cherry and myphone!!!!!!!!!!

  17. @abeolandres: meron palang problem yung cellphone na Cherry Mobile Trident. Interested pa naman ako bumili nun.. Thanks for posting this..

  18. @ mr. bogus

Sir, wala nang mas titibay pa sa 3210 :) with the possible exception of the original 6110 (chameleon!)

  19. “….they only recently discovered that the 3rd SIM slot would not accept any SIM that is larger than 32K (i.e. 64k and 128k) which happens with Globe SIMs.”

    ~and that would be stupid.

  20. hehe! Cherry….LEMONS….pati Appple na rin now.

may be not a bumper can solve the problem, it can be solve by replacing with 3 separated units.

  21. hahaha.,, guys.. its just a price-quality relationship.

the cheaper the device, the more it is prone to problems..

instead of cherry.. why not go with MYPHONE.

I bought one and kahit ilang beses ko na xa mahulog eh everything is still working well..

i also have a SAMSUNG I8910 HD.. 10X ko na xa nahuhulog and to the point na makalas pati battery but up to now eh working well and good as it was when i first bought mine..

  22. Buti na lang na-open mo issue na, kasi I’m also planning to buy this phone. Anyway, hope they would fix this problem.

  23. @Magnum

Well, okay, you can find me on Facebook but I won’t let you find me by giving it out myself. Duh?

So for you guys out there who’s planning to buy something similar to this, reminder lang, you’ll get what you pay for. Walang sisihan! :) May mga magsasabi na “Sus, brand name lang naman binabayaran mo for that phone” but nothing beats a reputable company’s quality and after sales service on their products.

Well yeah, aside from Apple, of course hahaha jk

  24. Birth pains I guess. It’s a good thing Cherry Mobile was quick to respond with a fix.

  25. actually, all phones has its own issues… expensive unit or not… remember nokia music edition (touch screen) kaya nga meron tayong tinatawag na “reviews” gaya ng yugatech

tama si Jhay… birth pains talaga but gladly cherry mobile solved this issue as early as possible.

i speak in my own opinion and not connected with any manufacturer and supplier.

  26. So much for comments saying “Take that, other fruit phone! Cherry Rules!’ Appearance may rule and tri sim concept but if it’s so buggy forget it!

  27. last time apple.. next is cherry.. naku humanda kayong mga blackberry users!

  28. +1 for Jhay. Although for any development process, there’s what we call prototyping. If ever prototype1 presented bugs/problems, the company should be able to come up with prototype2, 3, 4… That’s how they would prevent birth defects/pains.

Cases like iPhone 4’s antenna gate problem, Cherry Trident’s tri-sim bug and many others, is because of the development team’s lack of *exploration* on the prototypes (if they even produced prototypes).

We’re not sure how the whole development process is happening on Nokia, RIM, Apple or even small time players like Cherry, myPhone, etc. But small or big, it’s everyone’s responsibility to make sure they produce quality products.

    -100 for Les Paul
Do you even know that CSR means Customer Service Representative? And oh, spare me from your thoughts na baka CSR ako.

Mga tipo mo yung taong MEMA. Me Masabi at Me Mapagbintangan lang.

  30. I couldn’t agree more. Arvee’s right, CSRs are not to blame. They just pass on to their customers what infos are on hand and they pass on to the management what the customer can say about the product. Being a CSR, yes we’re biased. We support our company’s products/services and even recommend them to others but if something is wrong, we humbly excuse the product from other customers.

You get what you pay for? Maybe, but not all the time. let’s take the iphone 4’s problem for example. the fault is on its hardware. with any company’s policy, if it’s on the hardware, it should be serviced or replaced as long as it is within the warranty period. some customers have gone through the so-called silent recall. but customers who go right in front of a apple store were sent back home with no solution on hand. to be fair with cherry mobile, they allowed their customers to return the product and made them chose if they would want to replace it with another unit or promptly return their payment. at least, that’s what i have read on the tipidcp topic. while apple, chose the cheap way of treating their customers. a case.

-disclaimer: I’m a CSR of a telecommunications company, not of any phone manufacturer.

  31. @Manong that was witty! hahahaha. i love reading comments.

  32. I previously had a cherry m35, it had a steel casing. after a few months spots showed up on the casing. when i brought it to the store they sent the unit to the supplier. The phone is still under warranty and then the supplier(official cherry mobile) told them and me that it is not under warranty because the defect is cosmetic? What? There was very few scratches all around the cellphone. the spots were defects and they tell me it its my fault? they had me pay to change the casing. i had to because it looked so dirty and the spots gut rusty. but now i don’t use it anymore i am going to sell it cheap and i do not recommend cherry anymore to my friends. I tell them it is a piece of trash and the warranty is not worth it.
Another problem? the battery got drained quickly after just a few months. The phone resets after calls. JUST DON’T BUY THIS TRASH!

  33. Hi,

Do you already have the review unit of the phone? How was it? Are the problems fixed already?

I ended up buying Samsung Wave and i’m loving it hehe..

  35. I was actually surprised that even these China Phones have *software updates*! Nakakatakot pa bumili kasi madaming sims, baka mas mataas yung SAR levels na nag ccause ng cancer. :( Kelan kaya sila magkakaroon ng 3G dual sim like Verzio’s. Tska pare pareho lang sila ng Apple, nagongopya ng technologies from other inventors like Nokia.

  36. sayang i’m planning to buy one pa naman..

compared to cherry tri sim, mas ok kaya yung torque na try sim??

    watch mode muna ako..

  37. i own a torque triple sim fone.. the trinity as they call it. i like it. it works perfectly well.. even the wifi works as i want it. the tv is clear and so is the audio. i never regret getting myself one.!

    2) WiFi – bilis ng netq(well depend nrn cguro sa area mo kng gnu klakas ang wifi), easy to use pa. facebook all the tym
    3) 3ple sim – astig nga e nggmit q sbay sabay mga sim ko in just 1 phone. alang problema sa network
    ————-

ok na sakin to as long as walang, maging problema trident ko. hopefully tumagal sya kahit 2 years man lang.

  40. may kasama naman sya extra battery kaya if you sum it up e di 4 hours na din . . . . . i mean 4 days

  41. thanks for your comments. im having a second thought of buyig trident phone talaga. but with your review… thanks mabe i’ll save money first and bu samsng wave instead. so anyone there who bought samsung wave/… pls send me your opinion atmy email ad. samsha****@****.***
