Listen to article

If you are looking to switch from an old physical SIM to an eSIM on your iPhone or Android device? Well, you are in the right place.

As you may have heard from our previous articles, Smart Communications now allows users to convert their physical postpaid SIM to an eSIM—but here’s the catch, you’ll need to do it through a Smart Store.

Don’t worry; we will walk you through the process and provide a quick guide based on actual experience.

First, take note that our number is a postpaid signature plan (Signature Plan 999 to be exact).

Now, to get started, Visit the nearest Smart Store or Smart Center, usually found in major malls nationwide, which in our case was the Smart Center in SM Bicutan Parañaque located on the 2nd floor, in between the Power Mac Center and Huawei Store.

Once you’re there, approach the customer service counter and inform them that you want to convert your postpaid SIM to an eSIM.

Then you’ll be given a queue number if there are other customers in line. luckily in my case. I’m 2nd in line.

Once you are in front of the customer representative, you’ll be asked to verify your account details—such as your name, mobile number, address, email, and valid ID.

After confirming ownership, the Smart representative will process the request and Send a unique QR code to your Email, which in my case took less than two minutes. They will also remind you to be in a stable connection and that a Wifi connection is a must to avoid any necessary errors.

The QR code that will be given is tied to your number and will activate the eSIM on your device.

Once received, simply scan the QR code using your phone’s camera.

On the iPhone (in this case, an iPhone 16 Pro Max), go to Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM > Use QR Code, then scan the code.

Your phone will automatically begin the conversion process.

Take note: your signal will temporarily disappear Once the SIM deactivates. This is normal. After a few minutes, you’ll see a prompt to complete the eSIM setup.

Once finished, your device will reconnect using the newly activated eSIM.

Reminder:

  • Conversion time: Less than 1 minute once QR code is scanned
  • Delivery of QR code: Within the same day via email
  • Temporary no signal: Expected during transition

After that, you’re all set—your Physical postpaid SIM is now a digital eSIM, and you can safely remove your physical SIM card. You can now also insert another SIM card in the physical slot if your phone supports dual SIM (e.g., eSIM + nano SIM).

If you ever need to request another eSIM or number, you’ll have to revisit a Smart Center to generate a new QR code.

Final Thoughts

The switch to eSIM is fast, hassle-free, and future-ready—especially if you’re using newer iPhones or Android flagships.

Just make sure to back up your contacts and be ready for a short signal interruption during the transition.
