Smart Communications, the mobile arm of PLDT, has rolled out a new feature that lets its users make video calls directly from their phones without the need for apps like Messenger, Zoom, or WhatsApp.

The new service uses Video over LTE (ViLTE) technology, which works almost the same as making a regular voice call. If you’re a Smart or TNT subscriber with an unlimited call package, you can now place high-quality video calls and the cost will already be covered by your voice subscription. The best part is, the person receiving the call does not get charged, and they don’t even need to be a Smart or TNT subscriber to answer.
To enjoy the service, both the caller and receiver must have phones that support VoLTE and ViLTE. Android users also need to keep their software updated and turn on the VoLTE and ViLTE settings on their devices.
While many Filipinos already rely on popular apps for video calls, Smart said that ViLTE provides a better and more stable experience. Unlike app-based calls, ViLTE is more battery-friendly and ensures clearer connections even in crowded places. Users can also continue browsing, streaming, or playing games while on a ViLTE call without interruptions.
According to Smart FVP Lloyd R. Manaloto, the launch is part of their efforts to strengthen the company’s 4G and 5G networks nationwide. This expansion is meant to give customers smoother and faster services for video calls, streaming, and even mobile gaming.
With ViLTE, Smart says it is taking communication to the next level by making video calling simpler and more accessible for everyone.
