LG V30+ Unboxing and Hands-On

We first saw the LG V30 back in IFA Berlin last September. The LG V30+ isn’t really that much different except for the fact that it comes with 128GB 128GB UFS 2.0 storage instead of the 64GB (it’s an odd naming scheme, we know).

LG Philippines decided to release the V30+ instead of the V30 primarily to match the hardware configuration of the competition, most of which already offering 128GB storage as standard fare.

We already did our impressions of the LG V30 the first time we saw it in Berlin but if you’re still curious, here’s our quick unboxing of the device:

The more time we spend with the LG V30+, the more we liked it. It’s a refined version of the LG G6 and nothing like the V20 — sleeker, more polished and looks more premium. For a 6-inch smartphone, it’s not much bigger than the LG G6 which is just 5.7-inch. It’s also less blocky compared to the G6. The edges are rounder both at the front and back so it’s still comfortable to hold despite having a wider profile. It’s even lighter than the G6 by 5 grams and thinner too (7.3mm vs 7.9).

Just like the G6, the back side is covered by Gorilla Glass 5 (front and back) for protection which is nice but can also be a bit bothersome since it easily gets smudged with fingerprints. LG also claims they used Gorilla Glass 4 to cover the lens module. There’s a subtle pattern beneath the back glass of the back panel just like the one we saw in the LG G6+ before.

This is the first time LG used a P-OLED panel for their smartphone. It’s certainly a vibrant display with rich, vivid colors and deep blacks. The 6-inch display has a quad HD+ resolution (2880×1440 pixels, 538ppi) to fit the 18:9 screen aspect ratio. We’re hoping that the OLED display will help extend battery life considering the 3,300mAh battery is just the same as the smaller LG G6.

Sporting the newer Snapdragon 835 chip paired with 4GB of RAM (we’re actually hoping there would be a 6GB option for the V30+), the LG V30 pulls in quite a punch and got an initial score of 159,678 in our Antutu Benchmark although the numbers aren’t that high compared to other flagships we tested running Snapdragon 845.

The V30 runs on Android Nougat 7.1.2 with LG UX 6.0+. Of the 128GB, only 109GB is available for apps and files which is more than enough but you can expand that up to 2TB via the hybrid SIM/microSD card slot.

Perhaps, the more prominent feature of the LG V30 when it was announced is the camera capabilities. The dual rear cameras have quite the specs — a primary 16MP sensor with a wide opening of f/1.6 and a secondary 13MP sensor with f/1.9 and wide-angle field of view, a signature camera combo for LG. It’s only got a single LED flash but it’s pretty bright when we tested it.

The rear camera can shoot 4K video at 30fps or capture slow-motion shots up to 240fps at 720p. It’s got OIS+2.0 and EIS for better stability. It supports Manual Mode (photo and video) and can save in RAW format. The V30 can also shoot in LG-Cine Log (when in Manual Mode) which captures 211% wider color gamut (Rec.2020) for enhanced video. This allows you to grade the footage later on or immediately apply up to 16 different color grading presets to add a cinematic look.

There’s a lot more camera features here actually that requires digging. If there’s one thing that the V30 is trying to impress, it would be folks interested in mobile film or vloggers.

So far, the LG V30 looks very promising. We’ll try to figure this all out in our full review so stay tuned for that.
