O+ 8.12 first impression

We got another dual-SIM contender in the form of a 4.5-inch handset that goes by the name of 8.12. Check out our first impression of O+’s recently unveiled smartphone after the break.

Although majority of the 8.12’s body is made of plastic, the phone doesn’t look or feel cheap. It bears a striking resemblance to some Sony Xperia handsets with its plastic make and simple design layout.

Front

It’s 4 and half inch display features a qHD (960 x 540) resolution which looks decent enough for the most part. Sitting above its screen is a VGA front facing camera and a few sensors. One of these sensors is responsible for the phone’s unique feature called the Air Shuffle, which allows users to flick through songs or images without actually touching the screen.

A quick tour of the phone will reveal the two ports at the top namely the Micro-USB and 3.5mm audio port, volume rocker on the left and power/sleep button on the top right. Head on over to the back side and you’ll be greeted with a slightly protruding 8MP camera with its flash. There’s also a small opening way below the camera for the phone’s loudspeaker.

Back

Underneath the overlapping back cover is the handset’s 1850mAh battery with two SIM card slots which sits right above it. The 8.12’s inside is a familiar sight to entry level fans which includes a dual-core 1GHz MT6577 processor, 1GB of RAM and a standard 4GB storage. It currently runs on Android Ice Cream Sandwich, but is said to be upgradeable to Jellybean in the future.

O+ 8.12 specs:
4.5-inch qHD capacitive display, @245ppi
MediaTek MT6577 1GHz dual-core processor
PowerVR SGX531 GPU
1GB RAM
4GB internal storage
Expandable up to 32GB
Dual-SIM
3G/HSPA
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth 2.1
8MP rear autofocus camera, VGA secondary camera
720p video @ 30fps
1850mAh Li-Po battery
Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

We must say that the O+ 8.12 is one of the more decently built smartphone from their lineup and the addition of the fancy Air Shuffle feature differentiates it from its competition. It has the looks, we’ll give it that, but we don’t expect consumers to get this at Php11,995 especially when there’s a lot of other cheaper handsets that features the same specs.

O+8.12

Maybe it’s still too early to call at this point especially because we haven’t spent enough time with the handset. Catch our full review after a couple of weeks and see if there are enough reasons to get this smartphone over its competition.

don’t forget the 1080p video aside from 1G ram…that’s absolutely an advantage..and by the way the sales lady i talked to at the O+ kiosk said it also has gorilla glass.i hope.

Buying this phone is not worth it there are other phones that have the same feature as this one the only difference is the air shuffle that is kinda proves it self to be worthless u “Might only use the “airshuffle” on the table” but a phone is focused on mobility especially when one is called a “Mobile Device”
who would use airshuffle while on a car drivin’ or walking down the street

    Hi YugaTech!!
i always read your points of views when it come to gadgets. especially when you feature gadgets of affordable prices and are not of the “branded” ones.
Can i ask you to make a “review” for this gadget i saw at Toy Kingdom, an android tablet, it’s called the PAVIZIO X3. I want to know your points of view on this product. it costs a little below 5K. and i want to purchase this for my daughter. we are not of a rich family, and i want to give her something similar to any android tablets.
    THANKS VERY MUCH!!!

hello, that SHUFFLE feature is similar to my xperia sola floating touch feature.but floating touch is very beneficial even with screen protector.i would never but a phone without a major brand…and look at those android phones made by us filipinos, there are no software support

    • Avatar for Boomerwhang Boomerwhang says:

“Made by us Filipinos?” LOL! The local manufacturers like MyPhone and Cherry Mobile just buy them from different companies in China and India. The only thing Filipino about them, is the local apps they pre-install and the branding of the Philippine map or flag on the handsets (which was probably not even done here, but in their respective manufacturing plants in the real country of origin). The CM Flare is a rebranded Karbonn from India, while the Cloudfone Thrill 430X is the Innos D9 from China.

Agree with the author, 12k for that phone brand is expensive. Nothing premium about it, spec and brand wise. If it’s waterproof ok that’ll do but just 512mb more RAM and that shuffle, what is that anyway?, shuffling w/out touching the screen? There’s screen protector so dubious benefit. I think it’ll gather dust in the display booth. Better rethink your pricing O+

Hi, my wife won two units sa company xmas party. Gusto nya ibenta. I hesitated kasi di naman kilala ung brand. Try ko gamitin yung 8.12 and the 8.9 then benchmark performance ng dalawa. A farcry siguro to compare it with the iphone products like the 3gs and 4s that we are currently using magasawa. Otherwise will give you all an update.

Just want to clarify on something. Particularly on the internal 4GB. On Jelly bean, is it possible to install apps on the external gigs? based on my experience on my note 2, apps are installed inside the internal memory. Thanks.

sobrang mahal ng 11,995 for a rebranded phone.. napansin ko lng na mataas mgpresyo ang O+, lalo na at bago pa sila sa philippine market.. buti sana kung kaya nila tapatan ang aftersales/service na pwede iprovide ng myphone or even cherry mobile…

    • Avatar for ferdinand marte ferdinand marte says:

Korek!!!! sobra sa presyo, but what can you expect from a brand who can’t play the pricing-features game with CM. 2013 is almost here and it’s almost guaranteed that Cherry will once again surprise us. Mind you, CM products will get better specs with prices that will once again astound us. A CM rebranded Oppo Find 5 might become a reality. Go Cherry, GO!!!

    • Avatar for lenovoadek lenovoadek says:

magkaiba iba price range. p770 will be priced no less than 14.5k when it becomes locally available unless the p700/700i gets a price cut. sa mainland china kase nag drop ang presyo ng p770 to $219 usd.

really? what other phones have dual core and 1 GB ram for less than P12k? most of the cheaper phones have just 512 mb ram kasi…

    • Avatar for chacha chacha says:

the extra money goes to the 1 gig memory:)

meanwhile if you dont mind the 512 memory you can have QHD Smartphone alternatives such as:

      Myphone A888
      Starmobile Crystal
      CM Blaze (s3 Design Clone)

11+K to a dual core, not to mention a mediatek dual core, and a subpar screen even if it is 4.5″. I rather get Meizu MX 2 for 13+K. Or, Xperia S for 14+K. Also, for 15+K, Galaxy Nexus. There are tons of better devices to choose from on that price category which has better quality and specifications than this phone.

    • Avatar for lanceraven lanceraven says:

Kata i1 (from Owtel Shop) has a similar specs, if not a more decent one. and the build quality is much better. looks better as well than this phone.

    • Avatar for NeutralGuy NeutralGuy says:

@iantibay – kung dual sim lang ang point mo para bilhin ang product na ito. edi mag CloudFone Thrill 430x ka na lang. Di hamak na mas mura at mas maganda ang specifications. May 4160mAh battery ka pa for 8K. That’s too much for this phone. I just pointed out what are the better phones than this one on that price point. Besides, yung reply ko ay duon sa comment regarding the processor and price point. hindi namin pinaguusapan yung DUAL SIM!

    • Avatar for Nhel Nhel says:

@NeutralGuy sir kung sa specs lang din naman po eh di hamak na naman na mas mataas specs ng O+ 8.12 sa processor pa lang at sa gpu. tas 768mb lang ram ng CloudFone Thrill 430x. eto po 1GB po. battery lang ata lamang ng CloudFone.

    • Avatar for NeutralGuy NeutralGuy says:

maybe, but with that price point, I rather get Cloudfone. Or better, mag CM flare nalang ako.
