Samsung reportedly ditches depth sensors from its 2023 Galaxy A series

Samsung will allegedly remove depth sensors from the rear of its mid-range tier, Samsung Galaxy A24, A34, and A54 which are to be released in 2023, making it a triple-camera setup rather than a quad.

According to a report, Samsung’s removal of depth sensors are intentional to reduce cost and strengthening camera performance instead of having a bunch of ‘gimmicky’ cameras with less than 2MP count.

In recent tech industry, phones with triple- and quad-camera setup have been a norm, especially for mid-range phones. These camera setups usually includes a main wide sensor, an ultrawide or a telephoto, a monochrome here, and a depth sensor there.

Nothing.tech founder Carl Pei already threw shots at this in his prior tweet saying camera experience is much greater than just the camera specifications. “2 good cameras > 1 good + 3 cheap cameras,” Pei said, describing their Nothing Phone (1) only having two 50MP main and another 50MP ultrawide.

Samsung may be following suit, but only halfway as monochrome sensors will stay. The report also mentioned the initial camera specifications of the 2023 Galaxy A series:
• Galaxy A24 will come with 50MP main + 8MP ultrawide + 5MP macro
• Galaxy A34 will have the same setup except the 48MP main
• Galaxy A54 will also have  50MP but only 5MP ultrawide should this report is correct, and the 5MP macro
