The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has announced to acknowledge the decision of AF Payments Inc. (AFPI) to provide 125,000 free Beep cards to EDSA Busway commuters.
Following the recent suspension of mandatory use of beep cards, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque mentioned that President Duterte is against the imposition of additional charges for public transportation using beep cards, stating the expensive costs for commuters.
DOTr has extended appreciation towards the AFPI which is the provider of a contactless electronic payment beep card.
Through the use of a smartphone app or online, passengers can now buy virtual tickets. DOTr also believes that the use of QR technology for electronic ticketing on the EDSA Busway is still one viable option for commuters.
Previously, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) announced that it will adopt an automated automatic ticketing system by 2021. The latest initiative of the department for shifting digital payment solutions for public transport aims to lessen the physical contact of passengers and drivers as the country continues to fight against COVID-19.
The department also acknowledges the proposals from other automatic fare collection system (AFCs) providers, as much as their systems are ready for integration, and will not put additional charge to commuters.
