Apple names John Ternus as new CEO, Tim Cook to step down in September

Apple has announced that longtime executive John Ternus will become its next chief executive officer, replacing Tim Cook after more than a decade at the helm.

Ternus, currently Apple’s head of hardware engineering, will officially take over as CEO on September 1, while Cook transitions to the role of executive chairman.

Cook has led Apple since 2011, following the resignation of co-founder Steve Jobs. During his tenure, the company grew into one of the most valuable in the world, reaching a market value of $4 trillion.

He will remain CEO through the summer to oversee the leadership transition and will continue supporting the company in a strategic role, including engagement with global policymakers.

Ternus is a veteran within Apple, having worked on major products such as the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and AirPods. He also played a key role in Apple’s transition to its own silicon chips.

Apple described Ternus as a leader with strong engineering expertise and a focus on innovation, with Cook calling him the “right person to lead Apple into the future.”

Industry analysts say the leadership change may reflect Apple’s push to strengthen its product direction, especially as the company faces increasing competition in areas such as artificial intelligence and next-generation devices.

While Cook is credited with scaling Apple’s business and driving financial growth, critics have noted a lack of breakthrough products comparable to the iPhone in recent years.

The appointment of a hardware-focused CEO could signal a renewed emphasis on innovation, particularly in emerging categories such as wearables, foldable devices, and AI-integrated products.
