Australia social media ban for users under 16 now official

Listen to article

The Australia social media ban for users under 16 is now official, as approved by the Australian Parliament. Previously reported, this move aims to safeguard the physical and mental states of the youth.

The country is the first to implement a bill that keeps minors from using social media platforms. This ban will take effect 12 months after its passing. Notably though, no platforms have been specified. Either way, platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and X will be subject to the new rules imposed by the country.

To enforce this, the Australian government is pushing for the development of an age verification system. This includes biometrics, government identification methods, and collaboration with social media platforms for implementation.

Australia’s means of regulation among younger ages is proving to be stricter when compared to other countries. The only other noteworthy country committed to this is France, blocking social media access for those aged under 15 with exemptions.

We have yet to see if the ban will be effective. After all, the ban in France led to the use of VPNs to work around the restriction. What do you guys think of the Australia social media ban for users under 16?
