DOTr, MRT-3 offer free rides to compensate for issues with new system

Listen to article

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) are offering free rides to passengers experiencing issues with the new cashless payment system’s pilot run.

This addresses a recent problem, with passengers being charged the maximum fare of PHP 28 when tapping out at exit turnstiles. This new initiative was launched on Monday, August 4.

Affected passengers will now receive a non-expiring single journey ticket, equivalent to the maximum fare. To claim it, passengers must present proof of the failed tap-out transaction at any MRT-3 ticket booth. In addition, the ticket received can be used for a future trip.

DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon acknowledged the technical issues, assuring the public that system improvements will roll out within the month. Additional cashless turnstiles are also set to arrive in August.

He asked for the public’s understanding and patience during the pilot phase, which began on July 25.

For reference, the new system accepts cards, the GCash commuter QR code, and NFC-enabled Android smartphones.
