As per an article on Inquirer, Greenhills is working on implementing a transition to become a high-end mall. For context, Greenhills Shopping Center is an infamous establishment known for illegal trading and pirated devices.
It’s garnered attention from the United States. It’s currently the sole establishment in the Philippines on the US watch list for piracy and counterfeiting.
The 2024 Review of Notorious Markets for Counterfeiting and Piracy highlighted the following in a report:
“Law enforcement authorities in collaboration with rights holders have conducted raids at the mall”. “The management at Greenhills Shopping Center has applied a three-strikes rule to take action against counterfeit sellers”.
“The government, through the National Committee on Intellectual Property Rights (NCIPR), has worked with rights holders and shopping center management on implementing a transition program to transform Greenhills Shopping Center into a high-end mall with legitimate sellers”, it added.
The government’s program includes efforts to rezone the mall. Merchants are also being pushed towards selling local products with incentives and premium locations in the mall instead.
Inquirer added that these movements have been welcomed by rights holders. It was seen as an opportunity to collaborate with government authorities and Greenhills management to remove counterfeit sellers.
A report from May 2024 says that 80 percent of sellers have already transitioned to selling local products. This includes antiques, artwork, furniture, and jewelry.
However, despite recent efforts, Greenhills is still popular as a destination for purchasing fake foods. Rights holders have reported high volumes of counterfeit items in secret storerooms as of late.
The NCIPR has recorded USD 617.8PHP 35,844INR 53,024EUR 601CNY 4,524 million worth of counterfeit goods seized from ports of entry, physical markets, and warehouses from January to September 2024.
