Meta adds new features to protect older users from online scams

Listen to article

Meta has rolled out new safety tools on WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram to help older adults avoid online scams. The company says the update is part of its ongoing effort to make the internet safer, especially for senior users who are often targeted by fraudsters.

On WhatsApp, users will now get a warning if they try to share their screen with an unknown contact during a video call. This feature is meant to stop scammers from tricking people into revealing personal information like bank details or one-time passwords.

Messenger is also getting smarter with the help of AI. The app can now detect suspicious messages from new contacts and alert users about possible scams. If flagged, users can send the message for AI review and get information about common scams, plus the option to block or report the sender.

Across Meta’s apps, users can now log in more securely using fingerprints, face recognition, or PINs through the new Passkey feature. Meta also continues to promote its “Scams Se Bacho” campaign with India’s Department of Telecommunications to teach seniors how to spot fake messages and links.

Through digital literacy programs like Saksham Senior, Meta hopes to build awareness and help older adults browse, chat, and stay connected safely online.
