US passes bill that could ban TikTok by next year

Listen to article

The US House of Representatives just passed a bill that could ban TikTok entirely.

The updated bill is requiring ByteDance to sell their platform to a US company within a year instead of six months Failure to comply will result in TikTok being removed from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

TikTok responded preemptively, saying that the ban ‘tramples the free speech rights of 170 million Americans, devastates 7 million businesses, and shutter a platform that contributes USD 24 billion to the US economy annually’.

The House of Representatives was left unfazed, as they approved the bill with more support in comparison prior. Author of the bill and Texas Republican representative Michael McCaul noted that it would protect Americans and America’s children from the ‘malign influence of Chinese propaganda’.

The aforementioned bill is suggested to pass a vote in Congress, with US President Joe Biden left to sign it into a law. Biden already mentioned that he was in favor of this bill, with ByteDance’s time running.

The company has twelve months to find a US buyer, otherwise their social platform faces a ban in the US market. But what do you guys think about the ban on Tiktok? Let us know in the comment section below.
