Top 10 Massively Multiplayer Online Worlds

According to GigaOm, World of Warcraft holds the record in their Top 10 Most Popular MMOs. The complete list includes the following:

1. World of Warcraft – 8.5 million subscribers (released 2004)
2. Habbo Hotel – 7.5 million active users (released 2000)
3. RuneScape – 5 million active users (released 2001)
4. Club Penguin – 4 million active users (released 2006)
5. Webkinz – 3.8 million active users (released 2005)
6. Gaia Online – 2 million active users (released 2003)
7. Guild Wars – 2 million active users (released 2005)
8. Puzzle Pirates – 1.5 million active users (released 2003)
9. Lineage I/II – 1 million subscribers (released 1998)
10. Second Life – 500,000 active users (released 2003)

Aside from World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, and Second Life I haven’t heard of the other MMOs. I know Gaia Online but it’s supposed to be a message board or forum (practically the world’s largest message board according to BigBoards with 7,838,975 members).

Guild Wars seems to be doing good here in the Philippines but I wonder why Ragnarok Online isn’t on the list?

I not to mention my buddies appeared to be analyzing the excellent key points from your site and so unexpectedly developed an awful feeling I never expressed respect to the site owner for those strategies. All of the men are actually for that reason glad to study all of them and now have honestly been taking pleasure in them. Appreciate your actually being quite considerate and then for making a choice on these kinds of essential subject matter most people are really wanting to discover. My personal honest apologies for not saying thanks to sooner.

Ragnarok isn’t on the list because it’s almost as bad as FFO. Popular in the PH doesn’t mean popular in the world.

    7. Guild Wars – 2 million active users (released 2005)
    9. Lineage I/II – 1 million subscribers (released 1998)

Awesome! But the Lineage I/II is more than 1 million currently ;)

I don’t agree with GigaOm though, there is a difference between an “active user” and “subscribers”.

Secondly, there is a difference between a “free-to-play” game and “monthly subscription” games.

Third, there is a difference between “non-paying ‘active’ users/subsribers” and “PAYing ‘active’ users/subscribers”.

So their list is really more of just a list, nothing more, at least in the business perspective.

    Anyway…

@Alwell, Lineage II South-East Asia will be distributed for free in both CDs and DVDs. No need to buy a box just to play. No need for Game-Keys. Additionally, Lineage II can be handled by almost all iCafes in the Philippines (and Malaysia).

Never really understood the appeal of Runescape. Both my older twin brothers are addicted to it. Meh. IMO, it’s an eyesore.

AMDG has been marketing Lineage II for few months now and I’m not sure if PINOY gamers will be interested to the game.. As far as I know if the MMORPG will not be released for Icafe gamers it won’t become a hit. At least here in the Philippines.

Dusty is right sirs. RO is mostly a PH phenomenon. As for GW, I heard that selling box sets isnt really the way to go anymore. I think AMDG invested a lot in the box set model for selling GW. Its too costly. :)

Lineage is mostly a Korean phenomenon.

Ragnarok is mostly a Philippine phenomenon.

Runescape is a web based (forgot if it’s flash or java) mmorpg. No installation hassles plus it’s free 2 play.
