Sony is stepping up their game when it comes to smartphone imaging with the announcement of the new type 1/2.6″ stacked CMOS 22.5 megapixel IMX318 Exmor RS image sensor with hybrid auto-focus and 3-axis image stabilization.

The Sony IMX318 image sensor boasts the industry’s smallest unit pixel size at 1.0?m and a built-in hybrid AF (phase + contrast detection) with a claimed AF speed of 0.03 seconds.
The new sensor also features a 3-axis electronic image stabilization for video for smooth 4K video recording, HDR imaging, lens resolution correction, white spot correction, and noise reduction.
Sony aims to ship the new CMOS image sensor in May 2016.

My initial reaction was picking my jaw from the ground.
Hope your final reaction won’t be ‘mehhh’ when it comes out. Sony usually disappoints more than it hypes when it comes to its mobile cameras.
Sony’s initial product releases usually only looks good on paper but fails miserably in actual until it undergoes some iterations in the future.
