Apple Unveils watchOS 26 with AI Features and Smart Gestures

Listen to article

Apple just dropped the newest watchOS version — now called watchOS 26 — during its WWDC 2025 keynote, spotlighting a stunning visual overhaul and smarter, fitness-first features backed by Apple Intelligence. This is a bold move to unify its software look across devices and take wearable smarts to the next level.

What’s new in watchOS 26?

Say goodbye to flat interfaces — watchOS 26 introduces Liquid Glass, Apple’s semi-translucent, real-time-reflective UI language now across the Apple ecosystem. On the Watch, it’s used in widgets (like Smart Stack), Control Center, Photos faces, menus, and more for a glassy and immersive feel.

One of the biggest highlights? Workout Buddy, an AI-powered fitness companion that uses real-time data — from pace, heart rate, weekly stats to personal records — to provide spoken motivation and milestone shoutouts during workouts. Available initially in English, it supports popular activities like running, walking, cycling, HIIT, and strength training.

A neat wrist-flick gesture lets users dismiss notifications, calls, and alarms with a simple gesture — handy for quick access. Plus, watchOS 26 adapts call and notification volumes based on ambient noise levels for more intuitive alerts.

The Workout app gets a facelift with corner shortcuts for quick access to custom workouts, pacing, and routes. And for motivation? Apple Music can auto-play tailored playlists during your session.

Smarter Watch with Message Translation & Contextual Widgets

Live Message Translation now works on-device, translating incoming texts instantly.

– Messages also gain AI-powered “Smart Replies” and actionable suggestions (e.g. “Check‑In” when someone asks “let me know when you arrive”).

Smart Stack widgets become context-aware: suggesting gym workouts at your routine time or launching Backtrack when you lose signal.

– Plus, Apple Watch now supports the Notes app — jot down ideas or check lists right from your wrist.

watchOS 26 includes accessibility enhancements: Live Captions for the deaf or hard of hearing, and advanced Live Listen controls—useful for remote microphone accessibility right from your wrist.

Availability & Compatibility

Developer previews are available now, followed by a public beta next month. The stable release is set for fall 2025, compatible with Apple Watch Series 6 or newer, Apple Watch SE (2nd gen), and Ultra models paired with an iPhone 11+ running iOS 26. Note: Apple Intelligence features like Workout Buddy, Live Translation, and Smart Stack hints require Apple Watch Series 9/10/Ultra 2 and a supported iPhone.

watchOS 26 pushes Apple Watch deeper into smart assistance and customization. The new Liquid Glass revamp gives the UI a modern, unified look across devices, while the AI-fueled Fitness and Lifestyle features—especially Workout Buddy—bring health tracking closer to real coaching. If you’re on a Series 9 or newer model, this could be your most compelling watch software yet.
