Twitter removes malicious and misleading tweets

Twitter recently updated its COVID-19 policies, which remove malicious tweets that “incite people to action and cause widespread panic, social unrest, or large-scale disorder.” This proactive enforcement and spam detection of the social networking site prevents the further spread of misinformation and can cause potential harm online.

Among the rules included in the update are the detection of spam accounts and broadening guidelines on unverified claims. Any content and Twitter accounts that could lead to the destruction or damage of critical infrastructure incite people to action and go out of their homes, and forms widespread panic, fear, and social disorder will be removed and blocked from the platform.

According to Twitter, it has removed more than 2,200 misleading and potentially harmful content since the policies were introduced last March 18. Its system also detected 3.4 million accounts who have discussed COVID-19 with spammy or manipulative behaviors. Twitter also expresses its continuous efforts in identifying and blocking spam accounts amid the pandemic.
