In March 2022, the Ronin Bridge, an Ethereum sidechain for Axie Infinity, suffered a security exploit resulting in a theft of approximately USD 625 million. The United States Treasury linked the hack to the North Korean cybercrime group Lazarus. Developer Sky Mavis paused the bridge, conducted security audits, and pledged to fully reimburse affected users. The bridge reopened in July 2022 after implementing enhanced security measures.

Axie Infinity: Origin is a free-to-play version of the game announced by Sky Mavis. Its alpha version was launched on April 7, 2022, featuring upgraded Axie art, new animations, and gameplay mechanics like sequential turns, a Rage system, and Runes/Charms. The launch was slightly delayed due to the Ronin Bridge security breach.
