SpaceX is expected to provide internet services in the Philippines using Starlink, a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite network constellation with over 1,600 satellites currently in orbit, and will come in handy in servicing areas where the usual mobile and fiber internet is not easily accessible. Manila Mayor and Presidential candidate Francisco “Isko” Moreno stated that he has been authorized by the Manila council to go into talks and negotiate with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to bring Starlink’s satellite internet connectivity in an attempt to improve and boost internet connectivity in Manila. Bringing Starlink will further improve the internet connectivity in Manila, especially in preventing any interruption during disasters and in benefitting public school students in Manila who experience slow to no internet connectivity. With Starlink’s low-orbit satellites providing fast speeds and low latency, they expect to eliminate any dead spots with users being able to expect download speeds between 100 Mb/s and 200 Mb/s and latency as low as 20ms in most locations according to Starlink’s website. Starlink has sent out emails to interested users in the Philippines allowing them to reserve and put down a deposit for future services. This has put Starlink as an official internet service provider in the Philippines, albeit it will be delivered in 2022.
