Sky Broadband offers 5Mbps at Php999

Sky Broadband is set to launch a new offering for their internet service — a special broadband plan of (up to) 5Mbps at only Php999 a month with a 15GB cap.

Now that looks like a very attractive offer if you’re not really a heavy user and don’t spend a lot of time surfing at home (mostly people checking emails, FB and Twitter with a little bit of YouTube now and then).

Telco insiders are saying that around 80% of broadband users don’t really consume more than 15GB of traffic a month, then this alternative plan is for them.

If 15GB is not enough for you, Sky Broadband also offers another tiered plan — 5Mbps at Php1,999 with 35GB cap.

If you think you use more than this amount of bandwidth, then you can still stick to the un-capped (or unlimited) bandwidth plan at 1Mbps for Php999 a month. People now have more choices which plan fits their usage pattern.

may signal po ba yang di2 sa panabo city?

  3. leeto says:

  4. Jon says:

Yeoch. Kung 20gb yan, sold ako. That’s more or less my minimum monthly usage. So what happens when we go overboard the 15gb? Do we pay more or just get slower speeds?

    This is interesting.

  5. Rygel says:

    That’s a lot better than Wi-tribe’s offer of 2MBPs @ P1999/month with a cap of 12GB!

  6. Myke says:

15GB is just 1 Steam full game for game, so what happens if I reached the cap? Am I back to 1Mbps?

If that’s the case, it’s OK..hopefully they get Bulacan coverage soon.

  7. someone says:

the 15GB cap is combined upstream and downstream right?

  8. Chris says:

    @Myke:

You will be disconnected automatically, and you will need to “top-up” your account.

    It’s P100 per GB.

    @jon:

If 20GB — you will be charged P999 for the first 15 GB and P500 for the 5 1GB topup.

  9. erik says:

Why would you want to take this offer? Just for their theoretical speed? If for some reason someone forgets to log off or your kid downloads a tv or movie and forgets about it then what?

I say stick to the unlimited so there are no worries.

If you want a bucket type system maybe just count the downloads as an alternative.

  10. Jhay says:

Sounds tempting and it may be practical for users who just check their email, FB, Twitter and a few YouTube videos, the faster speed could easily tempt them to stay online longer and do more things.

  11. Jedd says:

Lol! What good is 5mbps for when all you do is tweet, email, facebook, and a little youtube? The market interested in faster internet are ones who do more: they youtube a lot, view internet videos in HD, they download a lot. They torrent. They are into big media. they may be filmmakers, video people, photographers, graphic designers. And that 15gb cap is a little tight.

    • someone says:

Look at the statistics. The telco(s) pointed out that “80%” of their subscribers do not consume more than 15Gb of data.

This plan caters to them, the majority of subscribers.

It’s only logical that the 20% who consume more bandwidth should have to spend more than what the majority of subscribers are paying for.

    • Jedd says:

They should charge P600 or less for these people then. The 80% who aren’t really using and taking full advantage of their internet subscriptions. Instead of giving the tweeters, emailers, facebookers more speed which they don’t really need, give them cheaper fees.

    • yuga says:

      @jedd – business-wise, it’s not a good idea.

    • jedd says:

I’m just pointing out that this is a farce deal. This is essentially what they’re telling users: Need a lot of bandwidth? Want to enjoy HD video, download from App stores? You get 1mbps. Just tweeting, email, and Facebook? We’ll give you 5mbps!!!

It’s not giving users anything of value per their usage patterns contrary to what you say.

  12. Jemuel says:

it is very expensive. internet and electricity in our country is very expensive

    • adam says:

    • Igatech says:

I admit that his comment is inaccurate. But it is not Anti-Asian (he’s comparing two Asian countries. It’s more like it’s anti-Phil.)

More importantly, his comment doesn’t have anything to do with race. Stop being too PC to the point that you see slights where there are none.

  13. daniel says:

BTW… panu ba malaman kung ilang GB per month conumption mo? answer naman oh! hehe

  14. Jeff Jularbal says:

  15. SHITTY OFFER says:

What a shitty offer!! Sa ibang countries 100mbps less thatn 2k pa! Hayup kayong mga telcos! Ginagago nyo lang ang mga pilipino.

  16. Mr.A says:

Make it 500 per month and you got yourself a deal.

  17. Mikko says:

Certainly not for me who consumes 30-50GB downstream per month.

  18. carmz says:

baket walang inet na below Php600 per month??? compare to other countries parang mahal ng internet sa pinas?!

  19. Enrico says:

Skybroadband’s service is more disappointing than the competitors!

I have a client who got their 12mbps corporate plan with bundled cable tv, but sad to say their download and streaming speed is just same as my 1mpbs at home!

Funny because we were expecting to watch youtube videos without any lags but the buffer still exist. i think they are capping it, we are downloading files from our ftp server at only 100kpbs, buti pa sa 2MB ng pldt or smart ko sa bahay tlagang mka pag download ka ng 150kbps na consistent.

So after a year my client just dumped skybroadband then switched to another ISP.

  20. alex says:

5mbps?! haha! ayusin niyo muna infrastructure niyo!

  21. amang says:

parang hawing sa A4TECH yung logo ni yuga.

  22. roiji says:

i am currently a subscriber of their 3Mbps.
Last time I checked they have 7 proxies.
Pag down, most of the time 2 proxies are down :(

  23. F. Lee says:

… 80% download less than 15GB per month because that’s all they could download…

I have an unlimited 768 Kbps connection that only works at that speed at around 2 in the morning till about 7 a.m. and I dl about 6-8GB a month. With 5Mbps, 15 GB would be used up in maybe a week.

Unlimited with a guaranteed consistent, even if lower, connection speed is still better.

Virgin Media in the U.K. I believe offers 50Mbps connection speeds. Now that is fast!

  24. Winziph says:

this is a big ass bs promotion

  26. invn says:

this is a good offer. wi-tribe is a joke. :)

  27. utara_panaka says:

Well you just can’t have everything. May trade off palagi.

  28. NineSwordz says:

“Telco insiders are saying that around 80% of broadband users don’t really consume more than 15GB of traffic a month..”

Oh really? =/ ano nagpakabit ka ng net para mag chat at e-mail lang? ugh please.. haven’t they heard the words STREAMING, ONLINE GAMES and DOWNLOADS? dumb [email protected]#$%les.. XD

    • jet says:

    • NineSwordz says:

Lol I know right. FYI lang bro.. kahit magbukas ka lang ng website.. you’re still consuming “bits”.. meaning you’re downloading parin, kahit konti2x lang. Even bigger with flash-based websites.

So what if meron 1 desktop + 2 laptop sa bahay mo. With your so-called different usage pattern ng mga tao in 1 household, I don’t think kasya yang 15GB mo dude.

    • bim says:

and it begs the question, why the hell do you need 5mbps for you to make status updates on facebook, twitter or youtube? para bang naglolokohan lang tayo. They offer 5mbps to those who don’t need it and and offer 1mbps to those who actually need 5mbps. That’s retarded.

    • roiji says:

      it’s possible really.
not everyone knows how to play or do play online games.
there are even some people who doesn’t know how to play youtube videos.
and there are people who only download things from yahoo mail (attachments).

    • Operation Super says:

I think the only dumbass here is you. If I explain it, I think you won’t be able to comprehend it so why bother.

    • NineSwordz says:

As if you can explain.. ni wala ka ngang opinion na naka post? lol. Try to post something first dude. XD

  29. adam says:

Ok na sana yan pero mas ok siguro if 20GB usage at that same price.

  30. David says:

No thanks. I’d go through that bandwidth in 2-3 days.

  31. Sonofa says:

Ano ba yan? Complain ng complain… kung ayaw niyo then stick to your old plan…

  32. Karl Mac says:

That “up to” 5mbps means 0 to 5mbps. Don’t be fooled.

  33. Pipo says:

I torrent a lot so this won’t work for me. Also, that 5mbps speed happens in the “ideal” world only.

  34. meow says:

BOOOOO Walang kwenta 15gb cap.. kaya nga gusto mabilis net para makapag download ng mabilis

  35. otepsphere says:

so ideally sino dapat ang mag avail ng ganyan kabilis ..atsaka bakit pa may 15Gb cap..whew!

  36. Lorenz says:

Just went to the official site of that offering (www.lifeat5mbps.com), and just found out that:

[1] The bandwidth top-up rate – if 15GB/mo. is not enough – is PhP100 per additional 1GB, and
[2] They have another 5Mbps plan, this time with a 35GB bandwiith data limit, at PhP1,999 per month.

  37. nigel says:

at 5mbps i could use its bandwidth cap in 2 days

  38. Game Rumble says:

A lot of people I know download 2GB to 4GB size of data(file) a day. This is surely a no-no for tech people.

  39. YOPINTECH says:

Im a user of SkyCable I subscribe 1.5mbps but they give me 1mbps.. kaya imposible ata yan YUGATECH ..

He2x Check it out this how to use ipad.

  40. donclark says:

another false hope ng mga ISP…iiyak ka lng sa P999 mo..better try hacked wimax, TOR or VPN para libre..tsk tsk another false advertisement…

  41. razorous says:

I’m actually not sure how much I use in a month… I think it would be great if Sky Broadband could give us details of our monthly usage (im currently subscribed to their 1.5mpbs), then personally inform customers that would fit great for this new offering.

  42. erickkk says:

I think the reason why people doesn’t consume more then 15gb per month is due to the sh*tty slow & intermittent Internet service.

  43. Gerald says:

some movies are more than 1Gig so 15 Gig is small.

  44. Joe says:

Alam niyo ang kulit niyo!!! sinabi na ngang base sa study nila eh 80% of internet users consume less than 15 GB. If you think 15GB is low, then you must be one of the 20% who downloads a lot, then it is not suitable for you and not designed for you, then use other plan and stop barking-up the wrong tree.

  45. reichnamjel says:

base on experience, di niyo rin ma aapreciate yung 5 mbps nila na THEORITICAL speed.

nag subscribe kasi last May 2010 sa 6mbps unli plan nila. and walang kwenta. mabilis lang pag youtube (di lang naman youtube ang ginagamitan ng internet). on all other things, mahina, para kang naka dial up. lol. ang pangit pa ng customer service. pag tumawag ka sa kanila, sasabihin lang na gagawan “raw” nila ng paraan. pero ala pa rin.

    summary:
i only had SKY broadband for a MONTH, disconnect ko na agad, binalik ko personally yung modem nila kasi ayaw nilang kunin sa bahay (di ka nila i-didisconnect kung hindi masauli yung modem) Php 4,999 pa nun ang 6mbps plan. sinayang ko lang pera ko sa kanila :(

  46. Daniel says:

I am using sky…Dati umaabot speeds ko to 3-7mbps..pero simula nung january 3mbps na lng…Dahil siguro jan. hehehe…

  47. koSinggawLu says:

kukulit! parang mga hindi nagbabasa, nakalagay na nga “if you’re not really a heavy user and don’t spend a lot of time surfing at home” =))

btw, 5Mbps is the port speed. it’s the speed between your modem at home and the switch of your ISP. connection rate to the internet is another thing. that will depend on the CIR set by the ISP to their 5Mbps subscribers.

    pc modem ISP Internet

  48. muymuy says:

hi. I haven’t tried this yet. But I’m planning to. I think the reason why ISPs don’t give the advertised burst speed to the fullest is because of those downloading illegal stuff 24/7. The bandwidth cap is a logical move to apply fair usage policy. So, I think sky will be able to give those subscribed in the 5mbps plan up to 70% of the advertised speed. Sky should.

  49. Lezuric says:

How I wish this can be available in my area too.. Myself as a heavy user does not really consume more than 10gb a month..

  50. Alain says:

nako. pano pa kaya ako?? downstream is 250GB per month… =D

  51. joe says:

    @ Alain,

  52. ezwon says:

isang malaking kalokohan nanaman to ni lopez… hahahaha… kakabit lng ng 5mbps promo-kuno na to samin… tuwangtuwa pa ung mga team ng nagkabit kasi pumalo ng 7mbps nung nag speedtest kame… eh cnong niloko nila… hahaha d stable ung speed… then madalas dc… d pa siguro ok ung infra ng sky… pero try parin namin ung static ip nila na inoofer for P250 per month… bka sakaling maging stable na…

  53. Alain says:

    @ joe,

  54. xanthe says:

how will you know if 15gb or more ung nacoconsume mo a month?

  55. CG says:

Maybe I will try this one someday… For now I’m still happy in my current provider…

  56. Sid Vicious says:

5 mbps down speed pero may 15 gig cap? napaka stupid naman. panu mo ma i-enjoy ung speed mo? with speeds like that, you’re bound to DOWNLOAD AND DOWNLOAD AND DOWNLOAD. walang duda yan. pointless! btw, if you’re such the so-called “light user”, BAKIT KA PA KUKUHA NG 5MBPS NA CONNECTION SPEED? nako-nako naman.

    • Michi says:

It’s about the speed of the internet. If you need that program/file NOW, then you can really get it NOW. Hindi yan tungkol sa unlimited or not. GETS NYO?

    • TyoPaeng says:

this sounds more like an excuse rather than a convincing explanation

  57. Nicolae says:

  58. Fleeb says:

If you are given a lifetime supply of cigarettes for free, will you just be bound and bound and bound to smoke until supplies last, then complain that there are no more supplies thus making the supply “free and unlimited” worthless/misleading?

(Not a tight analogy I know, but that’s the picture.)

    • Iyan Sommerset says:

@Fleeb If your supplier has a much smaller warehouse than other suppliers in other parts of the world and refuses to build more warehouses, instead telling you to consume less cigarettes (even though you’re supposed to have unlimited) then yes, you can definitely complain.

    • nobody says:

sabihin nalang nating prang trabaho toh, sabi sayo ng boss mo sweldo is 100 per item na matapos mo ia-assemble and the max assembly speed is 5items per hour for 12hrs a day, 30days a month.
natapos mo is perfect 1800items tapos sweldo mo is 15K lng kasi sabi nila yun daw max na sweldo eh dapat nakuha mo is 180K, sino ngayon naloko?

  59. chia2xboink says:

my limit pla yan. well ako hpy nko s sun broadband ko. P50 lng unlmtd n ko for one day. s umaga up to 300kbps ang speedtest. s gbi nmn nglalaro s 1mbps -1.8mbps. advntage ko lng cguro eh un i’m about 200 meters away s cellsite nila d2 s novaliches

    • nobody says:

^ lol, i use about 25GB a month alone from up/downloading PDF format files for projects and proposals, and this is only one part of the picture. i use about 10GB a month just by babysitting the news(stocks, item prices, etc.) on multiple sites(yahoo, msn, etc.), i use about 20GB a month by streaming with contacts to other countries because of meetings and tournaments and another 10GB a month by participating on these.

all in all this sums up to 65GB a month but this is only a fraction of what i do with my internet, go figure.

how can i avail the services of sky broad band for my computer

  70. mariojr says:

basta kami mag pa cut na kami end of this month sa sky broadbandswitch na kami sa mobile broadband much cheaper and faster.

    • azhure says:

if you plan on cutting of your lined internet connection becuase you find broadband cheaper and faster, i guess you got some idea wrong, broadband depends on signal(location dependent), stability, and for a clearer info, broadband wont go any faster than lined connection, here is the difference,, with the plan 700kbps of pldt and a globe or smartbro with 3mbps, your 700kbps is a lot more stable. i had some site to visit and remote desktop to use. i cant even connect to my remote desktop using broadband that is said to be 3mpbs or 2mbps or lets just say 1mbps but with 700kbps, i can connect to my remote desktop or cmmonly known for RDP, if you upload images on facebook, you can be assure that it will be uploaded using the 700kbps pldt but with broadband? damn…..your going to be stuck and repeating sthe upload..thats the difference between broadband and a lined or wired connection

Kalokohan yang internet package na yan, in a month maconsume mo lang 15GB. Sa surfing pa lang malaki na nagagamit. Tapos kapag nag excess babayaran per data. Sa ibang bansa ang limited usage nasa 100, 200, 500;to 1000gb.
