Sony said it is working on bringing AI-powered frame generation to PlayStation in the future to improve game performance without needing stronger hardware.

In an interview, PlayStation lead system architect Mark Cerny shared that Sony is working closely with AMD on this feature. The goal is to increase frame rates in games by using artificial intelligence, which can make gameplay smoother without relying only on more powerful consoles.
The work is part of a project called Project Amethyst, a graphics technology built for PlayStation systems. It is based on AMD’s upcoming FSR Redstone suite, which includes tools like upscaling, frame generation, and ray reconstruction. These tools help improve how games look and run.
Sony already has a feature called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, which uses similar ideas. The new AI feature will build on that existing technology to deliver better results.
However, Cerny said the feature will not arrive soon and is not expected within this year. He added that the technology is still being developed, but early progress shows that it may be introduced in the future.
Sony has not yet shared a specific release date, but the company has already started building the foundation for this upgrade.
