Cisco ends Flip Video line

So it looks like Cisco just wasted $590PHP 34,624INR 50,002EUR 562CNY 4,294 million when it bought Pure Digital Technologies, maker of the Flip video, back in 2009. The company has just announced it will be shutting down its consumer device division.

The Flip has only been recently launched in the Philippines (November 2010) so this news is a bit of a surprise. Looks like Cisco is not doing good so it will be dropping some parts of its business to concentrate on its core competencies.

Smartphones killed them pretty much, because that’s all the Flip did… video recording. Even an iPod touch does 720p video recording too and a lot more with apps.

This wasnâ€™t just a little mistake, itâ€™s evidence of cluelessness. But in a way, itâ€™s not all the fault of Cisco management. If they were allowed to distribute profits without dilution by taxes, maybe they wouldnâ€™t feel so forced to maintain unsustainable growth, and would focus on things they understand, rather than delude themselves into believing they could extend their success in enterprise and carrier networking to consumer gadgets. To keep their current jobs, the management obviously feels obligated to grow the company faster than the markets they understand can grow. Maybe itâ€™s not too late to cancel that tablet product.

cisco should just stick to making routers and switches…they have a very big market share anyway

so probably cisco will not invest anymore on same kind of gadgets. They are better on their current field not on that.
