0:00Your options for mid-range smartphones
0:02just got bigger with the release of the
0:03Tecno Camon 50 Ultra. On paper, this
0:07thing almost comes with a full package.
0:09It’s got triple cameras with telephoto,
0:11a pretty solid build quality with IP69K
0:14rating, a nice curved AMOLED display,
0:16and a long-lasting battery life, among
0:19others. In the same price range, you
0:21also have the Redmi Note 15 Pro Plus,
0:23offering pretty much the same set of
0:25features with a few differences. It is
0:27the more expensive option, setting you
0:29back 26,000 pesos as compared to Tecno’s
0:3220,000 pesos starting price. With that
0:34price difference, how does the Redmi
0:36Note 15 Pro Plus fare against the Tecno
0:38Camon 50 Ultra? We’ll answer that in
0:40this comparison. I’m your host Earl,
0:42roll that intro.
0:46>> [music]
0:51>> Looking at these two phones, you’d
0:52immediately notice the key distinction,
0:54which is the design. The Tecno has this
0:57vertical camera bump on the left, a
0:59plastic frame, and a glass back rocking
1:01a subtle two-tone finish. Meanwhile, the
1:03Redmi features a square-ish camera
1:05module on the upper middle of the back
1:06panel that’s made of a full leather
1:08material, and also has a plastic frame.
1:11Honestly speaking, I kind of dig Tecno’s
1:13design more. It is visually more
1:15pleasing to the eyes, at least in my
1:17opinion. Not only that, it feels much
1:19more comfortable in the hand. While both
1:21phones have curved edge design, it is
1:23more pronounced on the Tecno, and it’s
1:25also relatively thinner, having a 7.75
1:28mm frame as compared to Redmi’s 8.19 mm.
1:31Also, this might sound like a nitpick
1:33already, but I really don’t like the
1:35additional text here on the Redmi. And
1:37it’s nice to see Tecno not doing the
1:39same. Now, talking about the build
1:41quality, both phones sport the highest
1:43level of ingress protection yet with
1:45IP66, 68, 69, and IP69K ratings, and
1:49drop resistance as well. Although Tecno
1:52has one advantage up its sleeve, the
1:54additional Gorilla Glass 7i on its back.
1:56So, in terms of design and overall
1:58build, I think I’m going to give it to
2:00Tecno. Flipping over to the front, the
2:02difference here is not too obvious. Both
2:04get curved AMOLED panels with a crisp
2:061.5K resolution. The Redmi has a tad bit
2:09larger 6.83-in screen size with 120-Hz
2:12refresh rate, and in contrast, the Tecno
2:14sports a 6.78-in display that runs
2:17technically smoother at up to 144-Hz
2:20refresh rate. It’s not an advantage, per
2:22se. In fact, the 144-Hz won’t be as
2:25useful for daily use since most of the
2:27apps runs at 120-Hz or less. Anyways,
2:30when it comes to the visual experience,
2:32you can expect both phone to deliver.
2:34Their bezels are thin, and the image
2:35appears sharp enough for whatever
2:37content you’re watching. The listening
2:39experience is also close. Both phones
2:41support dual stereo speakers with Dolby
2:43Atmos support, and they both offer loud
2:45and decent sound output. The Redmi even
2:47has up to 400% volume, but at expense of
2:50clarity. So, you may want to keep the
2:52volume below 100% since it’s already
2:55loud enough at that point. As for
2:56biometric security, both get the same
2:58setup with an under-display fingerprint
3:00sensor, that’s optical, by the way, and
3:02of course, face unlock. Nothing fancy
3:04here as both work reliably fast in our
3:06experience. That said, the display
3:08segment ends in a tie. Moving on, let’s
3:10now talk about the performance.
3:12Interestingly, even with largely
3:14distinct chipsets, both phones perform
3:16similarly in synthetic benchmarks. The
3:18Camon 15 Ultra features the MediaTek
3:20Dimensity 7400 Ultra, while the Redmi
3:22Note 15 Pro Plus packs the Snapdragon 7
3:25S Gen 2. Taking a look at our
3:26benchmarks, both phones achieve about
3:28800K in AnTuTu version 11, and that’s
3:31not so bad. While the Redmi may have had
3:33slightly higher scores in Geekbench CPU
3:36and GPU test, the experience is mostly
3:38the same.
3:40>> [music]
3:43>> Both phones are snappy enough for
3:44lighter tasks like scrolling on your
3:46socials, browsing the web, and taking
3:48pictures or video, among others. Gaming
3:51won’t be a highlight here, although both
3:53phones are still able to play casual
3:54games with no issues. We tried playing
3:57non-demanding games and both phones can
3:59handle them quite smoothly at medium to
4:01high graphics. For more graphic
4:03intensive games, however, you may have
4:05to set expectations. Games like Genshin
4:07Impact and Wuthering Waves are playable
4:09on both devices, albeit the gameplay
4:11won’t be as smooth even if the graphic
4:13settings is set to low. As expected,
4:16both phones also warm up a bit during
4:17testing of these games, but not to a
4:20point that it was alarmingly hot. So,
4:22this round ends in another tie.
4:24Here comes the most exciting part, the
4:26camera performance. Tecno has a major
4:29advantage here as it includes a triple
4:31rear setup with a dedicated telephoto
4:33camera. It sports a 50-megapixel main
4:36shooter with OIS, another 50-megapixel
4:38for telephoto, and an 8-megapixel
4:40ultrawide. Up front, there’s yet another
4:4250-megapixel sensor for selfies. On the
4:45other hand, the Redmi Note 15 Pro Plus
4:47is left with a dual rear setup
4:48consisting of 8 200-megapixel main
4:51sensor with OIS and an 8-megapixel
4:53ultrawide. Like we always say, a higher
4:56megapixel don’t necessarily mean better
4:58image quality, and it shows. We took
5:01pictures of the same subject side by
5:02side, and it’s a close call in terms of
5:04image quality. Photos taken from both
5:06phones are decent having near accurate
5:08colors, nice clarity, and a respectable
5:11dynamic range with well-preserved
5:13shadows and highlights. The telephoto
5:15camera on the Tecno pulls through with
5:17relatively more detailed shots. This
5:19also means you have wider focal length
5:20to play with, which helps a lot for
5:22taking portraits. For video capture,
5:24both phones can shoot up to 4K at 30
5:27frames per second. However, for selfies,
5:29only Tecno can still shoot at 4K at 30
5:32frames per second, while the Redmi is
5:34limited to 1080p at 60 frames per
5:36second. And now we’re using the Redmi
5:38Note 15 Pro Plus and it’s shooting at
5:401080p at 60 frames per second. So, we’re
5:42utilizing the front-facing camera, and
5:44this is the sample video and audio of
5:46it.
5:47So, peeps, all if you get that, right
5:48now we’re using the Tecno Camon 15 Ultra
5:51and it’s shooting at 4K at 30 frames per
5:52second. So, right now we’re utilizing
5:54the front-facing camera and this is the
5:56sample video and audio of it. Videos in
5:58general look nice for both, but
6:00stabilization is still somewhat a little
6:02shaky at 4K, even though both phones
6:04have OS support. That said, I’m giving
6:07this round to the Camon 15 Ultra, mainly
6:09for having a more flexible camera setup
6:11and generally better image processing.
6:13Battery-wise, both pack a 6,500 mA hour
6:15unit with varying charging speeds. The
6:18Tecno gets a 45 W smart charging and the
6:21Redmi gets a much faster 100 W charging
6:23speed. Weirdly enough, the Redmi is
6:25still not implementing some kind of
6:26wireless charging, in which Tecno has.
6:29From literally having the same battery
6:30capacity and the same performance, it’s
6:33no surprise that both offer roughly the
6:35same battery life as well. In our PC
6:37Mark battery test, the Camon 15 Ultra
6:39lasted 17 hours and 36 minutes, while
6:42the Redmi Note 15 Pro Plus passed a tad
6:45bit shorter 16 hours and 40 minutes of
6:47up time. At the end of the day, battery
6:49life still mostly depends on how you use
6:51it and despite the higher charging
6:53speed, it’s not going to be a major
6:55advantage. Therefore, I’m giving this
6:57round a tie. On to the software side,
7:00the Tecno ships with the latest Android
7:0116 with HiOS 16 overlay, while the Redmi
7:04runs Xiaomi HyperOS tree based on
7:06Android 16 as well. Tecno is reportedly
7:08promised to get three major OS upgrade
7:10plus 5 years of security patches and the
7:13Redmi will be a year longer with four
7:14major upgrades and six years of security
7:16updates. This simply means that both
7:18phones will get at least Android 19,
7:20provided both companies will fulfill
7:22their promises. In terms of UI design,
7:24one thing’s for sure, they’re very much
7:26alike. iOS-inspired interfaces and blur
7:29effects are everywhere, except it looks
7:31better and more consistent on the Tecno.
7:33But, Redmi does offer better animations
7:35overall. Connectivity-wise, both phones
7:37cover the essentials, including Wi-Fi 6,
7:40NFC, [music] Bluetooth and an IR
7:42blaster. And happy to report that both
7:44phones already support e-sim. Tecno does
7:46feature what it calls the one-tap button
7:49found on the left side of the phone
7:50facing the screen. What I like about it
7:53is it can automatically analyze whatever
7:55screenshot you took, acting like a
7:56notepad on steroids. The Redmi doesn’t
7:59have anything similar, sadly. Despite
8:01the fact I’m giving this round another
8:03tie since it’s mostly subject as to
8:05which Android skin is better. That’s up
8:07to you. So, after throwing all the pros
8:10and cons about each phone, which one
8:12should you get? The Tecno or Camon?
8:14Well, if you care more about having a
8:16flexible camera experience, a more
8:18premium look, and of course, more value
8:20for money, then the Camon 50 Ultra might
8:23just be the one for you with prices
8:25starting at 19,999
8:27pesos. On the other hand, the Redmi Note
8:2915 Pro Plus sets you back at 25,999
8:33pesos, which is a bit of a hefty price
8:35for what it offers. It’s not exactly the
8:37most powerful mid-range phone out there,
8:40but it’s definitely one that you can
8:41rely on in terms of software support.
8:43So, if you also consider having a phone
8:45from a more established brand like
8:47Xiaomi, then you can’t go wrong with the
8:49Redmi Note 15 Pro Plus. So, there you
8:51have it. What do you think of this
8:53comparison between the Tecno Camon 50
8:55Ultra and the Redmi Note 15 Pro Plus?
