ZTE went out with the Nubia Watch and introduced it via a Kickstarter campaign. We got an early unit to play around with and I certainly got very curious about it.
As someone who has been using smartwatches for years, the design approach for most of the ones that have been released is almost the same that sometimes you can’t really distinguish from each other.
This time around, the Nubia Watch is quite unique. The 4-inch AMOLED screen is certainly the biggest display we’ve ever seen on a smartwatch. Second is the curved display that wraps around the wrist.
Powered by a Qualcomm MSM8909W Snapdragon Wear 2100, the Nubia Watch runs on a quad-core 1.1GHz Cortex-A7 processor and Adreno 304 with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage.
Unlike many contemporary smartwatches, the Nubia Watch is a bit chunky due to that wrap-around design where the display spans almost halfway thru your wrists. It’s not as elegant, as say the Huawei Watch GT2, but for those who prefer G-Shocks as their daily driver, this might offer some familiarity.
It’s got built-in WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0, and GPS with assisted GPS support.
The non-removable 420mAh Li-Ion can last over a day of heavy use (GPS and Music Players eats up a lot of battery life). The charging pad connects via USB Type-C port and fits snugly at the back of the watch. Charging is also quite fast.
The Nubia Watch is a pretty interesting and fun kind of smartwatch. It appeals to those who look for something new and different, maybe a bit geeky especially with that large futuristic design.
