Google adds feature to help Android users track lost luggage with airlines

Android users can now share the location of their luggage with airlines to help find lost bags, after Google introduced a new feature through its latest Android update.

Google announced on Tuesday that users who attach a Find Hub-compatible tracker tag to their luggage can now generate a secure link that shows the bag’s location. The link can then be shared with participating airlines to help track the luggage during recovery.

The feature works through the Find Hub app. Users simply select the lost item and tap “share item location” to create a unique URL. This link can be copied and submitted through the airline’s website or mobile app so the airline can check the bag’s location.

According to Google, the shared link will automatically expire after seven days. The sharing will also stop once the user’s phone detects that the luggage is back with them.

More than 10 airlines worldwide currently support the feature. These include Ajet, Air India, China Airlines, Saudia Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Scandinavian Airlines, and airlines under the Lufthansa Group such as Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and Swiss International Airlines. Google said more airlines may be added in the future.

The update is part of Google’s March software update for Pixel devices, known as the Pixel Drop, which also introduced several other Android features. These include real-time location sharing in Google Messages, short-form videos in Google Play to help users discover apps, and customizable “Calling Cards” in the Phone app.

Google also added new tools for Pixel devices and Android Auto, including gesture controls for Pixel Watch 3 and educational games for children using Android Auto.
