Wordpress 1.5.1.3 now available.

Just 3 hours ago, Wordpress released the latest security upgrade for StrayHorn v1.5.1.3 . Go ahead an upgrade your blogs.

After the recent security breach of PCIJ’s blog, I believe that bloggers will be more aware of the importance of regularly updating their web softwares. Along with WP, PHPNuke and PhpBB are two of the most widely exploited web apps. WP is quick in releasing patches and updates, while phpBB (now v2.0.16) regularly releases new updates as well.

Anyone who knows about the vulnerability can easily exploit them and your site might just be the unlucky target. PCIJ is still lucky the script-kiddie (not a hacker as popularly dubbed) only had limited access to their hosting account and logged in thru a WP hole, otherwise he/she could have wiped out all the files.

iPod prices dropped; iPod Photo, no more.

ipodsEarly today, Apple has announced that it has (again) reshuffled it’s entire line of iPods. The price of iPod Shuffle 1GB has been slashed by $20, iPod 60GB is down by $50 and the Special Edition 20GB U2 is now $329 ($20 less). I am sure that local prices will follow suit and official iPod stores around the metro will be holding another iPod sale (probably with BPI SIP).

Likewise, Apple has now dropped the word “Photo” altogether making the entire series with color screen and able to view photos. The iPod 30Gb is no more while the old 20GB has been upgraded to color at the same old price. The U2 version has now a color screen and able to view pictures. Related story from iPodLounge.

It’s kinda irritating now that Apple constantly upgrades the iPod generation so quickly. It keeps me wanna buy a new one (now craving for the 20 GB U2). My iPod Photo 40 GB is now 2 generations obsolete and I only bought it last March thru a BPI sale. I already changed iPods 3 times in the last 6 months!

Get your iPods from Amazon – Apple 20 GB iPod M9282LL/A
In the Philippines, old generation iPods have actually been on sale and cna be had between Php18,000 to Php20,000. I have also seen iPod nanos selling for about Php12,500 for the 2GB version and around Php15k for the 4GB version. The iPod video is also for sale at around Php19,5000. Check out your iPod dealers.

WP Date Image Hack

I am posting the simple hack I made with using dynamic images to replace the date entries of my blog. Just follow the short tutorial here to implement the same with your Wordpress blog:

  • Create your own date image template in Photoshop. Make sure that you layout them so that the month, day and year are all distinct from each other and not overlapping. See my example here :
  • Using the ruler guide in Photoshop, slice the template into three parts.
  • You will need to determine the date format you use in your blog. Mine uses day of week, day and month. Now create individual images using the sliced template and name them accordingly. For day of week, the naming convention is mon.gif, tue.gif, … sun.gif; for the day — 1.gif,… 30.gif; for the month — jan.gif, feb.gif,… dec.gif.

  • (Note: If you use full date names, you will need to name your GIF files similarly (i.e. Friday, February 22, 2005 will use “friday.gif”, “february.gif”, “22.gif” and “2005.gif”).
  • Now, we’re ready to hack the WP date function to replace text dates with images. Go to your WP theme folder and look for the post.php file and open it for editing. Note: depending on the WP theme you use, the file could also be index.php.
  • Look for the date function as such:
    < ?php the_time('D, M j') ?>

You will need to break that into 3 parts like this:

    < ?php the_time('D') ?>
    < ?php the_time('M') ?>
    < ?php the_time('j') ?>

Now we edit them so the code echos the image equivalent:

    < ?php $d = strtolower(get_the_time('D')); echo ("< img src= 'wp-images/{$d}.gif' > “); ?>
    < ?php $m = strtolower(get_the_time('M')); echo ("< img src= 'wp-images/{$m}.gif' > “); ?>
    < ?php $j = strtolower(get_the_time('j')); echo ("< img src = 'wp-images/{$j}.gif' > “); ?>
  • You will need to check on the date format parameter string if you have a different date format.

I hope that was fairly simple to understand. :D I’m not sure if this hack can be made into a plugin though. Maybe some other time. ;)

David Shea of mezzoblue.com made a simplier version using HTML/CSS. Update: Josh of File Me Away made the same tute for MT.

Frog with Implanted Webserver

Interesting experiment….

Experiments in Galvanism is the culmination of studio and gallery experiments in which a miniature computer is implanted into the dead body of a frog specimen. Akin to Damien Hirst’s bodies in formaldehyde, the frog is suspended in clear liquid contained in a glass cube, with a blue ethernet cable leading into its splayed abdomen. The computer stores a website that enables users to trigger physical movement in the corpse: the resulting movement can be seen in gallery, and through a live streaming webcamera.

A Million Hits Later

As of this morning, this blog has reached 1,091,094 hits for the month of June. That’s from 36,182 unique visitors contributing over 263,070 pageviews.

A sizable amount of those came from people downloading Hello Garci ringtones and the complete Arroyo-Garcilliano recordings. A total of 170,634 ring tones have been downloaded from this blog alone, and if TxtPower.org included my stats in their Inq7.net interview (350,000 downloads), that’s almost 50% of the vast majority of downloads.

A rough estimate of the total number ring tones sent over MMS is about 175. Had I not asked for a small contribution to cover sending of MMS, it could have wiped out 2 or 3 Smart buddy pre-paid cards in just 2 days. And had it been free, the numbers would have gone ten-folds and I’d end up with a big hole in my pocket. :D

Total bandwidth used was 365 GB.

On a side note, KaWebSpy has been frantically searching for other ad revenue sources I am using for my blog. Just to point him to the right directions, my Amazon Associate ads can be found here (only selected posts), my Xoom Affiliate text ads can be found on all individual pages just below the comment box, and of course my dual-stream AdSense & Clicksor text ads on all pages (AdSense seems to dominate the Clicksor ads due to obvious reasons that Google ads are far greater in number than Clicksor).

PhotoBlog Update

Many thanks to Markku for releasing beta 2 of iPap .9. I have now updated the Photo Gallery and what it needs now is a simple commenting system (of which Markku promised with the official release of iPap 1.0 :D ).

New galleries have been uploaded as well. Picture above was taken at OJ’s in Libis.

Blogger offers Image Hosting.

Blogger just added a new feature which will be a joy for every Blogger fans out there. The Image uploads can carry as much as 300MB of pictures and images. This could prove to be another strong point for Blogger to move ahead of the blogging race and maybe catch up with MSN MySpace. This was something one would expect though. I am even surprised they did not offer 1GB image hosting considering they are now owned by Google.

Here is Blogger’s help section on how to use the new feature.

An iPod-A-Month

ishuffle Mike Davidson has been having this great contest over his blog — the Mike Industries iPod-A-Month Creativity Competition.

Every month, Mike gives away an iPod shuffle to the most creative entry. He’s also giving another one who can come up with the idea for the month.

For the 3rd installment, he’s looking for the most creative alternative use of an iPod. I think I’m going for that iPod Shuffle this time. iPodLounge is also giving out a $150 Etymotic ER-6i earbuds to go with the shuffle.

Tweaks ’round and about.

Been doing some blog tweaks here and there whole week…

  • Page Views – I was finally able to make the Top10 plugin to work with the rest of the other plugins. Entries now have pageview count.
  • Image Dates – I did a simple hack into the WP codes to modify the date functions so that I get image dates. Pretty cool. 8)
  • iPap Photo Gallery – though still in beta version (v0.9), I got too excited and upgraded my photo gallery. It’s a bit of a mess in there now.
  • Excerpt function – to maximize pageviews, I switched excerpts instead of the full content on the main page. It also allowed me to cramp in more entries.

EDSAMail went kaput?

Recent reports from EDSAMail users indicated that their servers are down. I did some more diggings and checked on their domain registration and found it was still due on March 2006. I did a ping and traceroute to their nameservers both from my PC and from 3rd party online sites and got no results. A DNSReport of the domain showed both DNS servers are unreachable.

Heard they already closed shop. Can anyone confirm this?

EDSAMail started out as a free email service with built-in ads in the early 2000. They later changed their business model from a free service to a paid service asking a fee of about Php95 (Php660 up from Php365) per year per email. With the recent mail space wars between Google and Yahoo, EDSAMail must have lost a vast majority of it’s email users.

Avalanche is M$ own version of Bittorent

Microsoft researchers in Cambridge, UK, are developing their own peer-to-peer file-sharing software. Codenamed Avalanche, the program makes it easy to share content by dividing files such as software, audio or video, into chunks, much like BitTorrent. Using “network coding”, it can re-create missing blocks of data that can be used in place of missing chunks.

Updates while Bloghopping

Move on now, nothing to see here….

Some notable updates while bloghopping:

Google plans to go up against Paypal

Recent reports from the Seattle Times and the USA Today indicates that Google is planning for an online payment service. Major player Paypal of eBay is the primary target. Details of the plan are not up yet but it is most certain that the service will be rolled out sometime at the end of the year.

With Google’s $1.26 billion revenue for the 1st quarter of this year, I’m sure they’re gonna hit big time with the online payment system considering a lot of publishers and advertisers could very well be using this service once it’s made available.

Update (6/21/05) : Google owns GoogleBucks.com, the plot thickens.

AdSense Alternatives

While I bet that a 100% of Pinoy bloggers are using Google AdSense to earn a couple of bucks from their weblogs, they sure do need some poking around to try out other alternatives especially if they haven’t gotten a single check yet from Google. After getting about 5 checks since I signed up for AdSense last year, I reckon it would be best to supplement my current earnings from alternative publisher ad sources.

Yahoo will be launching its own publisher program (YPN) very soon, so for the meantime, here’s a list of some AdSense alternatives:

I would personally recommend Clicksor as it allows integration with my current AdSense layout. Thus, everytime Google does not find a suitable ad (and show a non-earning PSA instead) for a certain page, it will post my alternate Clicksor ad. It also allows advertisers to specifically target your site and you earn 85% of whatever the advertiser spends.

A complete list with explanations can be found here.

Hold off on a new PC purchase.

About a year ago, I upgraded my old and clunky P3 system and got myself an Athlon XP2400+. I’m not sure how much it cost me but with 512MB of RAM, an HIS Excalibur Radeon 9200 64MB, 1 x 40 GB & 1 x 80 GB Seagate HDD and 17″ Samsung 753 DFX flatscreen monitor, I guess the entire rig would have landed in the mid-30K to 40k price range. That includes my old Altec Lansing 321 and Samsung CDRW. It was a really great improvement then.

Just recently, I feel that my rig could not quite cope up with the demands and a possible upgrade is an enticing idea. So, after buying a new 160GB HDD last week-end, I checked out prices for a completely new rig. After rounding up an AMD 64 3000, 1 GB RAM, PCI Express card, DVD-RW and a 19″ flat screen monitor, I was abit shocked thatthe whole thing costs about Php55K. Still too pricey a PC for me.

Methinks, I should hold it off until the end of the year. With how fast new processors are being churned out by AMD & Intel, especially with the dual-procs and and quad-procs in the near horizon, I am sure the prices will drop to a more affordable level. Prices of RAM and hard drives are also on its way down. Let’s just wait a couple more months.

Besides, I am expecting a Mac Mini soon, so I’ll need to be on budget here. :)

Smart WiFi launched

smart wifiLaunched just yesterday, Smart WiFi is a new broadband internet service which allows users to get connected wirelessly thru Smart’s cell sites. The only thing you need is an outdoor antenna to serve as transceiver on any of Smart’s hundreds of cell sites nationwide.

Maximum bandwidth is up to around 128kbps and promo price starts at Php788/month. It’s an easy and affordable alternative if you don’t have phone lines in the neighborhood. This is gonna be a big hit once they find a way to bring access down to handhelds and portable devices (read: Tungsten T5 & Life Drive).
