Now I thought this one is a good deal. You get the iPhone 3G 8GB model for free when you subscribe to a new Globe Postpaid Plan 2100.
Learned about this from a friend who got her own Globe Postpaid plan last week and was given a free iPhone 3G. Apparently, Globe is clearing out all stocks of the old model before they finally release the iPhone 3G S by end of this month.
I compared this with the published rates on the Globe website and the Plan 2199 has a cash-out of Php9,400 with a 24-month lock in period.
The catch? Nothing really, except for the 36-month lock-in period. The offer stands until they still got stocks available. Not a bad deal, really.

Jedd – I paid $99 on the iPhone 3G with AT&T with a 24-month lock-in for $69.99 a month. That’s almost Php3,300 a month, makes the Globe plan cheaper.

Don’t compare Dollars to Pesos. In the USA the min wage is like $13/hr. In the Philippines its $5 a Day for 8 hours work.
In whatever angles you may want to look at it. Globe Telecoms is not giving any subsidies for the iPhone. I doubt they would even unlock you with a Free Unlock Code for the iPhone (or any sim-locked phone) once your contract is over. In the PH there is no laws or NTC ruling that would compel a Telco to unlock your phone for free once your contract is up. Unlike in the USA or in EU countries. Kung sa Load Credits expiry perion nga eh nilabanan pa nila sa NTC.
Not sure if this is still available. But you could buy an unlocked iPhone in an Apple Store in Hong Kong. If you could afford a Php 2,100 a month phone bill for 3 years locked in. Instead of paying Globe ripping you off for the privilege of owning an iPhone. Why don’t you get treat yourself a holiday in HK and buy one there? I know they afford it esp. with those cheap budget airfares.

From my point of view, it’s not that bad deal. It’s how you maximize iPhone 3G with that kind of deal that really counts.
For me, it’s still a good deal. Though not the best deal.

Why does apple (and many other companies) have to lock themselves in with specific providers? Don’t they realize how much they could increase sales by allowing people the freedom to choose their providers?

I don’t know with you guys, but I’d rather get a non-Apple product. Last week, I just got a free Samsung Omnia on Plan 1800 with a 2-year contract. This is what I can call a steal.

Blame it on the way Mobile Phone Industry operates.
Apple and the rest of the phone makers partner with Carrier providers with exclusive products to:
* Steal existing subscribers from another Carrier.
Ex: You can only get the iPhone from ATT in the US. Globe in the PH.
Exclusive Sim-Locked Phones are usually sold at Discount or given FREE by the Carrier.
* A 1, 2 or 3 year lock-in period means. The Free or discounted phone can easily be recouped while the customer is locked-in the plan. Thats why there are pre-termination fees. If decide to leave before your contract is up. You pay the carrier the subsidized cost.
* Its more expensive to attract new customers. Its cheaper to keep your current customers with a Free phone.
* An exclusive phone can ensure the customer are less likely to leave. If they cant get the iPhone from another carrier.
If there was NO carrier subsidies. An unlocked min. cost of a smartphone is $500 or more. You could buy an expensive netbook or laptop for that. So how many units can they actually sell if its not sold on a discount? Not many for sure. Unless its as attractive as the iPhone. Which Apple refuses to sell unlocked in most countries.

This is free… awesome with that plan. If you can’t afford it then don’t go for the plan.
