Hands on with a Nokia N6120

A visitors once left a comment asking me what I thought of this new HSDPA phone by Nokia. I checked out the Nokia 6120 Classic and thought it was a really good buy.

First of all, the unit is fairly priced. At about Php12,300, you get a 3G/HSDPA S60 phone packed with features. Here are some of the highlights:

  • It’s small, compact and lightweight: 105 x 46 x 15 mm at 89 grams
  • HSDPA — why settle with 3G when you can get 3.5G? It’s more than 2x the speed on coverage areas.
  • QVGA, TFT, 16 true million colors, 320 x 240 pixels, 2 inches
  • 2MP camera (4x zoom) with flash + a secondary camera for video calls
  • S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1

Surprisingly, the unit is very responsive. There’s no apparent lag time when using basic functions such as SMS or voice calls (unlike the that old N3230). The Nokia 6120 Classic can be considered a good upgrade to those who like me, loved the N6233 when it first came out about 2 years ago.

The new features that got me hooked up with this phone is the Symbian OS. This one came with the S60 3rd edition Feature Pack 1 — wireless keyboard, GPS, Nokia Maps, Wireless Presenter, Quick Office, Adobe PDF, etc. Tons of other apps too including a D! Beta where you can see a catalog of free and trial softwares you can download and install directly into your phone. It also supports firmware upgrade Over The Air. It’s really nice to have a lot of softwares and apps to choose from, something my Samsung BlackJack is seriously lacking.

Other new noticeable improvements include a speed mini USB with mass storage class, a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack, a text-to-speech feature, and a nicely sounding built-in stereo speakers.

It doesn’t come with GPS or WiFi like the new N82 but at Php12,000+, the Nokia 6120 is well worth it. (Another hot model is the cheaper Nokia 6300.)

Is the rate of using 3.5G/HSDPA same as current 3G rates? BTW, what really got my attention is that cool Firefox wallpaper on your monitors.. hehe.. where’d you get that? :)

I’ve been thinking of getting the N6120 for a while now. I had originally planned on getting an N800 for its wifi capabilities, but then I got a 770 instead to serve my mini-internet-computing needs, so now I’m torn between N73 and N6120. The latter is winning out for size, mini-USB, and good reviews. Sayang, it’s not sold in mainstream US retail stores.

I’m currently using my Nokia 6288 as a backup internet access (via Smart), if I buy the 6120 would I be able to access the internet via HSDPA right off the bat or do I have to subscribe to WeRoam or something ?

Wag nyo ng ilabas mga flaws nyo sa unit ng phone nyo.
DO you think ikaw lang meron nyan?

this is the unit provided to me by the company im working for. 4 days after, binato ko na sya. Im sooo frustrated sa unit na to.
    - palaging nag hahang
    - non multitasking
    - puno ng bugs (try nyo tignan)
    - olats na lens (2MP yes, pero olats ang lens)
    - at madami pang iba..

I wish I still can use 3310 unit of Nokia as it is low in radiation and no effect in our brain but Im hopeless cos we cant use it in our area cos we’re in Rural soo I’m suffering from Headache and Migraine. I notice that the more time I spend on the phone (N6120) the more it gives me headache. It’s true it’s not because Im weak or unstable immune system it is because Phones has an effect in our brain (brain tumor).
