Benchmarking the Intel Core 2 Duo E8500

Listen to article

Several weeks ago, Intel Philippines delivered this desktop PC at home for me to test. It was their top of the line Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16Ghz processor.

intel-e8500Been using it regularly and have done some basic benchmarks on it already but was wondering if readers have any inputs on what else to do.

We’re all familiar with the PCMark, 3DMark, FarCry and Quake 4 benchmarks widely available on the net. What I’m looking into are real world benchmarks that will help our readers here choose their CPU on their next upgrade.

I already own an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 so we can do some comparisons as well. So, we’re done with the usuals — Super PI, MP3 Compressions (LAME), video conversions, WinRar compressions, etc.

Anything else you think we need to do to stress test this rig?

Btw, it also came with 2GB of RAM, a GeForce 8800 GT 256-bit 512MB on an Asus Vento casing.

Do these all at the same time:

1. Encode video, not just conversions
2. Run a full system scan using an AV software
3. Edit high-resolution photos using Adobe Photoshop CS3
4. Play high-bitrate MP3 files with visualization on

Using Windows Vista Ultimate with Aero and Dreamscene on.

I think this will run out the Quad-Core Q6600 since it’s rated 3.16GHz. Q6600 would be my choice since I open up too many programs at the same time so. Plus, Q6600 has the right price, for a 10K php quad, you get yourselves worth for it. You’ll be future proof enough for the few following years.
