Want a free .com domain? Ask AOL!

Yup, free domains for those who want them. It’s free if you ask AOL nicely. Called AOL My eAddress, it will start giving out people .com and .net domains this September.

It’s part of the company’s recent strategy to stem the flood of defections (nearly 1 million in the second quarter) from dialup users who are switching to broadband and leaving AOL far behind. AOL already has lost more than a third of its subscribers since its peak in 2002.

AOL will still own the domain name and will have to do some sort of advertising to get back that $6 per domain their giving away.

If they’ve already lost so much users because of broadband, why haven’t they offered broadband services?

I’m not really that familiar with AOL, though I my relatives in Chicago keep sending me those free AOL CDs with hours upon hours of free dial-up access.
