Cherry Mobile MAIA Smart Tab hands-on, first impressions

Cherry Mobile launched today the MAIA Smart Tab – an 8-inch tablet powered by an Intel Atom Z3735F quad-core CPU, 2GB RAM, and has the capability to dual boot Android and Windows OS. Find out our first impressions about the device below.

The MAIA Smart Tab is an affordable device aimed at consumers with a tight budget yet want to own a capable tablet that can run Android and Windows. Given the low price tag, the MAIA Smart Tab won’t impress you when it comes to build and design.

Up front, we have the 8-inch screen with 1280 x 800 resolution which equates to 189ppi with decent viewing angles and good colors. No mention of glass protection but it already has a plastic screen protector out of the box.

Found right above the screen is the 2 megapixel front camera and light sensor. Down below is the capacitive Windows home button. On the right are the power / lock and volume buttons, while the left side and bottom are devoid of any buttons or ports.

Found right up top are the headset jack and microUSB port. Situated on the rear are the 5 megapixel main camera, microSD cards slot, loudspeaker, and tablet’s branding.

When it comes to quality, the MAIA Smart Tab is plasticky and far from premium which is understandable given its asking price. It’s also chunky at 9.2mm. On the bright side, it’s easy to grip thanks to the indentation found on the sides, while the matte finish at the back resists smudges and finger prints.

yuga, will this device take advantage of a faster microsd? Thinking of making this a poor (financially) programmers emergency (on gym) development machine with mysql, notwithstanding the absence of wear-leveling on microsd.

i think this would be good for students on a tight budget.

however, i’m still wondering about the hdmi.
can we upgrade it to windows 10? if yes, what about the storage.
how does it perform?
and most importantly, how long can it last in a single charge? :D

What makes this very good is that it can dual boot android and windows 8. It may not work on graphics intensive games but just think about thousands of VN games that you can play without 3rd party emulation.

The question is, what kind of windows 8 is it? Is it windows 8 RT or the standard windows 8? Windows 8 RT has some compatibility issues so I hope its the standard one.

pretty sure it’s the standard one. RTs I think are discontinued

More powerful than the alpha series (play? – the 8inch variant) and cheaper. Its so hard to use windows8.1 in an 8in device. And why not lollipop? Will wait for the full review. There’s no gps? How about other sensors?

GPS? honestly? for a cheap plasticky build you have to take extra care not to drop in indoors, to take it outside could be potentially waste of 5K.

Its a cheap dual boot device, i would definitely get this. Having other sensors or no.

Please show how much storage is available for each OS partition. I assume Windows eats up a lot of memory so I’m curious as to how much is left over for the system partition of Android
