Joyroom JR-TL1 Hands-On

True Wireless Earbuds have been popping up the market like crazy, and we’re pretty certain it’s not about to stop anytime soon. In this article, we’re checking out another TWS earbuds from  Joyroom, the JR-TL1. Unlike the JR-T04S, the JR TL-1 doesn’t have the same AirPods form factor. Check it out!

Unlike other TWS earbuds, the JR-TL1’s charging case comes in a pill-like shape, with an included wrist strap and two extra ear tips. It’s made of what feels like PBT plastic with a matte finish.

The lid is held in place by a strong magnet, but the hinge does feel a little flimsy. Opening the lid will reveal the triangular-shaped earbuds with rounded corners. There are four white LEDs that act as a battery indicator. If the battery of the case is between 75%-100%, then all four lights will light up. Three lights are on when the battery is between 50%-75%, two when the battery is between 25%-50%, and only one light is on when there’s only 0%-25%.

The buds themselves are quite large, measuring 6.5 x 3 x 3cm. Fortunately, the neck allows users to achieve a comfortable fit. As a word of warning though, due to the weight distribution of the buds, you should use the appropriate tip for your ear size else the buds will fall when in motion.

They’re rated IPX7 Waterproof and connect via Bluetooth 5.0. As for battery life, it’s advertised to last up to 6 hours of music playback with another 3 charges in the 300mAh case.

The buds pair automatically together once taken out of the case, and pairing to your phone is easy. After successfully paring to your phone, you’ll hear a “dong” sound, and the LED  on the buds will breathe blue light. Subsequent pairings are automatic and take only 5 seconds once taken out of the charging case.

The buds are controlled via tap controls, and almost the entire outer surface is touch-sensitive. For music play/pause, tap either bud once. To skip track, tap the right bud twice, and double-tap the left bud to play the previous song. For calls, you can answer incoming and end ongoing calls by tapping either bud for one second. You could also tap and hold the touch area for two seconds to reject incoming calls. Activating Google Assistant and Siri requires three taps on either bud.

• Alternating red and blue light on the main bud – buds have paired successfully
• Breathing blue light – In use

Doing a quick sound test, we listened to Childish Gambino’s Redbone, A$AP Ferg’s Work, and Daniela Andrade’s cover of La Vie En Rose. The Joyroom JR TL1 is capable of producing punchy lows and bass rumbles that hip hop and EDM lovers would appreciate. The mids and highs, however, were audibly recessed. The sound stage was wide thanks to its larger housing, although details were lacking, and individual instruments were a little hard to make out. Overall, they were fun to listen to despite the flaws. Casual listeners, hip hop lovers, and EDM enthusiasts would enjoy listening to their favorite tracks on the Joyroom JR TL1. Audiophiles and jazz lovers, on the other hand, may want to look somewhere else.

The Joyroom JR-TL1 is priced at PHP 1,690 but is currently on sale for only PHP 1,390 at Digital Walker branches and their official Shopee Store.
