Globe to offer Huawei E5830 Portable WiFi

Listen to article

Just finished guesting at Mornings @ ANC with @tjmanotoc where we discussed portable WiFi hotspots powered by 3G networks. I brought my SmartBro Share-It while TJ has this Huawei E5/E5830 with him.

The scoop actually, as TJ revealed in the show, is that Globe will be offering the Huawei E5830 on a postpaid plan soon.

The device is a small WiFi router that connects to your 3G network and offers portable internet for up to 5 devices.

Huawei E5/E5830
Wi-Fi 802.11b/g
WAPI
HSUPA/HSDPA/UMTS 2100 MHz
EDGE/GPRS/GSM 1900/1800/900/850 MHz
32GB via microSD card

The device lasts about 4 hours on a single full charge. It comes with a socket charger but can be plugged to your laptop’s USB port to get power. First saw this with @artsamaniego months back but it was only available in HK then.

This could be offered under a Globe Tattoo Plan 999 of some sort (just like the iPad WiFi + 3G Plan) and will have a one-time fee of Php7,500 for the Huawei E5/E5830 (TJ tells me it could be in staggered payments).

Anyway, it was also TJ’s last Tech Talk segment as he will be moving to another show and time slot (thus the obligatory photoshoot). Paolo Abrera will be the new host.

Hat tip to TJ for the scoop.

I got one for IDR 899,000 (approx. US$100). The bottom line is its easy to use. Primary use is to allow my iPad WiFi to get to the internet. It is quite a cheap solution compared to buying iPad 3G, plus a chance to share the connection with friends or just other devices I have.
I had a problem in setting it up for the first time. I can easily connect when it is hooked to a laptop, but stand alone, the signal indicator remains red. If I connect it trough a laptop then unplug it after connected, it works. Finally I found that I need to deactivate PIN of the SIM card. When connected through a laptop, the interface to enter PIN pops up. Stand a lone there is no way to enter PIN.

@nexusboy

i haven’t tried the maximum range of the WiFi access point in the Huawei e5830… but regarding your question about the ‘optimum distance’ there’s NO difference on the speed if the MiFi is placed 1 foot or 5 or even 10 feet away from my iPad… i think the speed will be based on the proximity of the MiFi router to the cellular base station, and not on the connecting device itself! =D

oh i see, that’s good to know RJ. thanks!

has anyone tested the RANGE of the mifi device? I heard, to obtain optimized speed which is at least 2 Mbps internet, the mifi has to be maximum 1 foot from the connecting device such as laptop or your smartphone. moving the device an inch further will cause the speed to slow-down in half. is this true?

@nexusboy

you can use the MiFi even while charging… =)

in any case, i won’t be needing this. nexus one’s got mobile hotspot capabilities anyway, so cool having Google’s superphone. :)

is it true?
The MiFi device can’t be charged from a PC or microUSB power adaptor while connected to WiFi and the data network, since only when the unit is powered down and disconnected can it be recharged.

@arvee – oh? didn’t know about that.

@biggie – I think this has got to do with the fact that graymarket prices tend to be lower as there are no import fees and taxes levied on them (as well as NTC approval).

Seriously, one time fee of P7.5k?! Are you kidding me? You can get this in philmug, sulit, applei, tpc for a mere P5.5k ah! Why don you go and buy it there and get a smartbro or sun broadband and you’ll get much better signal than globe. Globe’s 3G suck bigtime im telling you. Believe me, been there and gosh it was hell, felt like i wasted a lot of time calling their customer service. Ended up terminating my line and paying a termination fee pa. Sheesh..

TJ manotoc’s suit is so out of place, especially when you play around with tech gadgets and stuff, it would have been more suitable if he wears a black turtleneck shirt. LOL!

nice, i like that device. i can just leave it in my car: so i go online seamlessly from home, on my way to work, and in my office. didn’t bother trying their smart product, Globe has the most reliable connection among the three. :)

bought one via eBay.ph last May for only P6.4K (including shipping + postal tax)… it’s a 3 UK network’s Huawei e5830, but it was unlocked… it works great on SmartBro, Globe Tattoo, & Sun Broadband! =D

unfortunately, the Huawei e5830 is an old model, i bought newer one (Huawei e585 – with an OLED screen) for almost the same price!

medyo mahal yung P7.5K nung Globe knowing that the MiFi device may be locked to their own network! di ba? =D

HSUPA/HSDPA/UMTS 2100 MHz
EDGE/GPRS/GSM 1900/1800/900/850 MHz
32GB via microSD card

It’s good for globe only, smartbro default band is 850 Mhz for its HSPA.

If its not FREE i will not getting this one with Globe. I’ll buy instead with local seller of this Huawei E5/E5830 for P7,500 already unlocked.

The price is a bit prohibitive, but having a MiFi device can be handy if you don’t want to be draining your phone’s battery with continuous Joikuspot use or if you need to free it up for calls and SMS. Been working with the iPad Wifi only with Globe Tattoo Joiku installed in my E72. Good combo if you can tell people to text you through your other cell. :)
