Who’s more hi-tech: ABS-CBN or GMA 7?

Listen to article

Aside from the automated elections accomplished by the Comelec, two TV networks also displayed some hi-tech broadcasting over the week.

On one side, ABS-CBN employed Augmented Reality (AR) while GMA 7 claims they’re using some sort of hologram.

Let’s see some sample clips below.

Here’s the one by GMA 7:

The holographic image on the GMA 7 video looks clean and cut around the edges. This was made possible because the station used green screens (chroma key) to separate the person from the background. However, I don’t think they were able to bring the green screens out in the field so this was also done in the studio.

Here’s the one by ABS-CBN:

This one by ABS-CBN doesn’t seem to be nicely trimmed so you will see a portion of the background around the person being projected (the video over-lay is more prominent here once that cut-out footage of that truck is shown). However, this technique allowed the station to shoot out in the field (not sure though if they used multiple cameras here).

CNN did a more convincing one during the last US Elections — the render solid and cuts around the edge of the body with multiple angles; not flat and seemingly one-sided as the one we’re seeing in the videos above.

What would have been a much better method was a combination of the two — bring a collapsible tent out to the field, pull down some green screens and shoot using multiple cameras. I think this is what CNN did but it’s more expensive, needs more crew to operate and requires a lot of bandwidth.

In the end, I think it’s all about how the viewers perceived the broadcast and how it added to the viewing experience (technically speaking, these aren’t really holograms but augmented reality). So, who do you think did a better job at it?

Note: I didn’t watch any TV (except the livestream of ANC) during the whole election so I didn’t knew about this until last night when one of the TV stations called me up asking for help about featuring “hi-tech stuff”.

Update: Evening news by both GMA 7 and ABS-CBN tonight clarified some terminologies. ABS-CBN stressed they used the term “virtual presence” and alleges GMA 7 did not use the “hologram” technology the latter reported it did. GMA 7, on the other hand, somewhat back-tracked and referred to it as “holographic effect”. The station initially tested it in their studio then actually did it on the field.

Ganyan sa mga rivals, sasabihin ng team A “we’re number one, we’re number one!” Tawagin man nilang hologram, hologram effect, or virtual presence, para sa akin eh isa lamang itong camera tricks.

@dan aren’t you proud that our fellow Filipinos can match-up with CNN with the technology. Stop praising those foreign a-hole, of course they should be ahead but my point is even ABS or GMA didn’t overtake what CNN’s does but they are soo close. You should be proud that Filipino did that ok.

@kannunchi of course, news networks should also be credible to tell what the truth. I thought GMA is always pertain that they have “Serbisyong Totoo” or should I say Perwisyong Totoo. They should be responsible in all what they deliver in TV or unless make an apology if you did something wrong.

Well IMHO, I think that ABS did a great job on the coverage and they not just flaunting what technology they used or how much the cost of that technology. Before the election, ABS states that they will used hi-tech to deliver the news effectively while GMA say that too WITH terms like “Malaki po ang nagastos namin sa technology n ito, talagang gumastos po kmi”. They should not say that in the first place, we dont care about that. And I watched Mike Enriques interviewing NoyNoy, “Mike: Sen. NoyNoy: Ah teka, prang kailangan ko munang pagaralan yang hologram n technology n yan, pra akong estatwa eh.” whahaha.. look at what NoyNoy felt. But all-in-all I gave credit to all the efforts of all TV stations for the Election Coverage.

Since we mainly watch ABS-CBN at the heat of Election 2010, I think ABS are the first to use the hologram effect, then GMA later adapt the same technology but changed the name.

But seeing the one from ABS and GMA, image rendering of GMA is better than the one being used by ABS. If you used PHOTOShop or PaintShop, you can say that GMA guys has better knowledge in terms of layering the images or overlaying the image on top of the other (videos):)

Speaking in jargons again.. :P

And then they misrepresent the actual location of the people they were interviewing.. Pilitin ba namang magsinungaling ang President-Elect-to-be. Note: To-be.

HardCore abs kc me.

Obviously, the host is looking at a total blank space.

In this case, GMA showed well how hologram should look like by showing human structure in the studio.

ABS’s Augmented Reality should’ve been better in showing the landscape or actual location, or map.

Grabe! Isn’t the news coverage is more important than looking at these angles?

Before judging, look at how well they have delivered the news to people, and how relevant they are. But it is good to see how the two networks used advanced-tech methods to cope with the dynamic technology.

@zero-ice your absolutely right! that’s the right kind of thinking everyone must possess, not one-sided. two thumbs up bro! and congratulations to all the networks who gave all of their time and presence to make the first “automated election” (as far as everyone used the term) coverage a huge success.

from the start, abs has confirmed na hindi hologram ang ginamit nila, btw. i like abs moe kasi kahit nakikita yung background nung reporter, napapakita rin nila na talagang working on field ang abs while green screen lang ang gma… and gma has been braging about holograms when CE lang pala yun :))

Just like what some iPhone apps implement with images displayed on the camera, with the use of the GPS. Pero GMA’s sticking with their story.. It’s all green-screen and that’s fact. That’s why I don’t watch GMA.

The term Hologram Effect sounds misleading. Though it is indeed a visual effect that made it look like a holographic image. Still ain’t as convincing as the one they used in Star Wars decades ago.

Our local stations are trying their first time implementing these “high-tech” stuff on TV. Shouldn’t we all give them a pat in the back for trying?

It may be mediocre to you, but millions of less-fortunate Pinoys who watch TV, who have never seen CNN (who couldn’t afford to pay cable), might beg to differ.

Who cares if “automated” meant “automated counting”? Don’t we all understand what it meant?

Wag masyadong mayabang.

Not everything should be taken in absolutes. These people are human, incapable of perfection.

Being familiar with chroma, all I thought was that both stations were making suckers out of the viewers. I was thinking that they just decided to do this to:

1. coincide with the new technology used in voting.
2. to show that they are almost at par with what CNN did.

Despite their efforts to show it, they both failed in most techie fanbois eyes. In the end, it wasn’t how “high tech” the presentation was, it was the content that most viewers were after.
