Moto X official ad hints at Build-to-Order smartphones

Listen to article

After the unveiling of Motorola’s new logo, it seems like we’re getting closer and closer to the company’s next big thing – the Moto X. The company’s latest ad speaks a lot about the long-rumored device, and finally, up to a certain extent, things are confirmed.

moto x

The Moto X will be the first smartphone designed, engineered & assembled in the USA, and Motorola also states that, while it is a challenge, you can design the smartphone yourself.

We’ve been hearing a lot of rumors for the past months about the Moto X being a build-to-order program already, and whether “designing the smartphone yourself” is about external design or hardware specifications is still unknown.

While the Google Play Store isn’t available yet for the Philippines, it is fun to imagine that just by visiting the site, you can buy the phone that features the specs that you need & the design that you want – all under your budget and you get to walk away with it just like that.

As a PC hobbyist/enthusiast, I’ve been waiting since forever for smartphones to reach the DIY/customizable stage of development, so I applaud this innovative step in the right direction.

However, it’s pretty obvious that this particular ad is meant to capture the right-wing, anti-globalization crowd with its “built *here* in the USA” rhetoric. Not really that relevant to the rest of us outside the USA since American labor is leagues more expensive than the prevalent Chinese/Southeast Asian labor we currently rely on.

Thing is, that particular target market isn’t exactly tech-savvy, so I doubt this’d be more than just a passing fad.

Di nga makagawa ng maayos na TVs ang mga Amerikanong to smartphone pa kaya? There’s a reason why the largest industrial corporations are in japan and Germany.

Motorola has a very small presence here in PH. I highly doubt the Moto X will end up here.

Oh well, there’s always EBay…

this is wat ive been waiting for, a build your own smartphone just like buildng a desktop gaming rig.. hehe.. i guess it would be more of the inside specs such as cam, ram, rom, battery, cpu,, and a choice of os like android, windows, mozila or ubuntu? and maybe a 3-5 custom designed casing dependng on the screen size and display.. if i have a manufacturing company such as big as alcatel, this would be my ultimate goal.. i just dont know why their keeping their budget at low even though cla nmn ang pioneering company in terms of communication devices..
