Substack launches app for iOS, Android

Listen to article

Substack, an American online platform that provides publishing, payment, analytics, and design infrastructure to support subscription newsletters, has announced its mobile app for the iOS platform, and soon on Android.

Substack says, “It’s like your email inbox, but better.”

Substack reader app will bring readers’ newsletter subscriptions altogether into one inbox. The app features ‘Discover’ tab where readers can find new publications. Video subscriptions and podcasts are also accessible on the app. And readers may also add RSS feeds to it.

Substack says the app is “Like your email inbox, but better.” Featuring an email-like inbox but allows users to pause email delivery of newsletters, instead of opting only to receive mobile notifications. Although emails will automatically resume once the reader stops using the app.

“The app helps bring together Substack as an ecosystem, giving you an icon to tap on your home screen that opens up a treasury of quality work by the writers you most trust,” the company wrote in their announcement.

The said platform also allows individual writers and creators to send digital newsletters directly to their subscribers thru a content management system (CMS).

Substack is a newsletter-creation tool for writers, rather than a website builder. Their business model is simple — in exchange for the tools it provides writers, Substack makes money by charging a 10% commission of every paid subscriber. Writers who chose not to monetize their content can use Substack for free.

“With Substack, we have set out to build an alternative media ecosystem based on different laws of physics, where writers are rewarded with direct payments from readers, and where readers have total control over what they read. In this world, writers are rewarded for serving readers well, and Substack gets rewarded for serving writers well,” the company said.
