Tutorial: How to manually update ZenFone 2 devices into Android 6.0 Marshmallow

ASUS has began rolling out its  for the ZenFone 2, ZenFone 2 Laser 5.0/5.5ZenFone Max and ZenFone Selfie 39, which means it will eventually hit all devices as an over-the-air (OTA) update. Unfortunately, that could take several days or weeks, which can feel like an eternity. The good news is that you can download the official FOTA update straight from ASUS website and manually install it yourself. Do note that only the (ZE551ML/ZE550ML), (ZE500KL/ZE550KL) and ZenFone Selfie (ZD551KL) devices are currently supported for the manual update, the full firmware of the ZenFone Max is not yet available.

In this , I will teach you how to manually update your ZenFone 2 into the latest 6.0 Marshmallow.

Note: Before you do this, make sure to backup all your files first. I will not be responsible for anything that happens to you or your device when following this tutorial.

INSTRUCTION:

  1. Download the full firmware from ASUS. Be careful to select your device accordingly.
    ZenFone 2 (Mirror Link / Beta Update) ZE551ML     ZE550ML
    ZenFone 2 LaserZE500KL    ZE550KL
    ZenFone SelfieZD551KL
Note: After the download has been completed, just leave the firmware on the root storage of your device OR if you are using your computer to download, copy the file also to the root storage. File size is roughly 1.2GB – 1.6GB, use a stable internet connection preferably Wi-Fi.
  2. Once the above step is done, you will be notified of a “System Update File Detected” on your notification bar. If you do not get a notification, restart your device.
  3. You should see the prompt to select the firmware package you’ve downloaded, make sure that is selected and click on OK. After this, your phone will restart and begin upgrading toy Marshmallow. Then you will see that “Installing System Update” and “Android is upgrading” message.
Note: It will take roughly 20-30 Minutes for the update to be completed, the phone can’t be used until the update is completed.
  4. Your ZenFone 2 / ZenFone 2 Laser / ZenFone Selfie is now upgraded into Android 6.0 Marshmallow!
You will be greeted with the Marshmallow notifications as the phone booted up and you will also get a prompt that the “System update is successful”.  You may need to update Google Play services and some of the preloaded ASUS apps after the update, so please check it and do so.

  1. I guess that I messedup my smartphone :'( tried to put the file, reboot, wipe cache, etc. but nothing worked. Then I tried to update from recovery (TWRP) and not it doesnt even turns on lol

  2. Not just me pero maraming nakaka experience na walang prompt for update kahit irestart. i remember back when i was trying to update my Zenfone 5 this way same problem.

  3. not turning on and not charging…

  4. Where exactly do you put the downloaded file? I mean the exact file location. Thanks to answer.

  5. bkit wala po ngpprompt sa ze551ml ko asa root storage nman po…

  6. Baka naman kasi naka root kayo unroot it first.

  7. Will they be releasing Marshmallow 6.0 on zenfone selfie?

  8. I already put the file in the root storage and i also restarted the phone but still there is no prompt or anything. Any help here? Thanks!

  9. Me & my friend were able to get the Marshmallow update via the System Update on our Zenfone 2 Laser 5.5S last week pa. No problems encountered and no Laptops/Computers used to update.

  10. Does not work on the 551ML. Its the first time i checked the recovery mode – and that does not work too. Maybe an earlier update f*d my phone’s startup routine. FYI, its not rooted, nor am i running a custom ROM, its basically stock. Being a techblog, YT may have devices just lying around (i might be wrong) somebody should have tested this before posting and this info is already on other sites – no need to repost. This article almost seem like clickbait to me.

  11. Any feedback on Manual Update in Zenfone 2 551ML?? Wala kasing OTA update na lumalabas sakin. :(

  12. You can flash back your stock rom

  13. HELP, IT STOCK ON BLACK SCREEN MORE THAN 30 MINUTES, WHAT DO DO?! :(

  14. Anyone tried using ADB sideload? or flashing the rom in recovery?

  15. Updated my ZenFone 2 Laser 2 weeks ago. All of my apps that I stored in the SD card prompted to uninstall after Marshmallow 6 update. Then, I wasn’t able to connect to my dsl connection at home.

I need to download WiFi Manager app so I can access my Internet connection. Weird thing is that I was able to use other WiFi connection whenever I’m strolling at a mall and at our office but doesn’t work at my Wifi connection at home.

  16. Admin. Please remove or correct this article. There is no official release for zenfone 2 550/551ml yet. Just beta-release. Devices might get bricked over this misunderstanding.

  17. Hi. I downloaded the file and placed it on the root storage. I explored some forums then they say that I need to extract the file on the directory then it should detect the files. Sadly, no prompt for me. I restarted it a couple of times but no update notification is showing up. Btw, my phone is not rooted. Can someone help me with this kind of problem?

  18. how about Zenfone 2 Laser ZE601KL

  19. Dont try this unless you know how to restore your Rom. Not for rooted users, Custom recovery like TWRP, etc. Re-enable any system or default apps that you may have disabled. If your Rom or Bootloader or Recovery have been in any way altered, official updates from ASUS will cause your phone to brick or do a bootloop. This should have been a warning in the article. A manual update is always risky.

  20. ZE551ML is not working.

  21. Will flashing this in twrp work?

  22. This doesnt work. It is still on BETA stage.

  23. Masyado bang advance yung akin kasi 1 month ago pa yung update eh? Zenfone 2 Laser 5.0 user here.

  24. hahaha hahaha,i see so many around here that did tryed the beta, pfff, and i see 1 in here even that bricked hes phone trying to install the beta through TWRP,hahaha ,well, first of all for those that thought they are smart,i will tell you how you can manage to install the beta, first of all,the phone has to be unrooted, that’s the first and very important, which it means no TWRP,second, your bootloader has to be unlocked,3rd,your room has to be stock, with all the apps that comes with the original stock rom and unaltered ,that’s why many did bricked their phone, even tho some i see that think they know what they r doing hahaha, now,i just told you how u can have that beta of the android MM for ZE551ML,it is working great and it is stable,i have it and i can say that i love it,the battery it last longer in standby, but ofc i took care of 2 things that always were crap and always will be crap,as i saw in this movie that r ppl that really believe that those craps worth something,1 is the proccess killer,or apps killer and second is that cm security, for the first 1,there is no app in this world that actually do something to kill a process on android, for a simple reason, the apps that those apps try to kill actually have 0 power consumption and ocupy 0 kb in memory, now, that app is useless for a simple fact,it stays loaded in memory, consumes lot of power,it has to stay loaded to search for the loaded apps and try to kill them when they r,that is power consuming for nothing,it was proven lot of times, those apps consume memory and power more than any other app,for the second,i wanna hear just 1 persone that found a virus in hes/her android device ? there is none, not yet so another thing that is useless for now on a phone,so…good luck installing the new beta,if you know what you’re doing…

  25. i think two weeksago, i updated my sisters zenfone 2 64 gb version using adb following instructions from http://www.stechguide.com/update-asus-zenfone-2-to-marshmallow/
first i tried copying the update, tried to rename it, relocate it used different memory card but still no popup update is showing.
then i tried adb, and in less than 5 mins it was in MM.
I bought the device for her in MemoExpress so we can say it surely is a local version.

  26. Why the update need a latest version of lollipop?
Its always failing to update the firmware i download and it has 1.6 gb of size..

  27. i try to reboot my cp lot of times but the software update didnt show off please help me zenfone 2 ZE551ML

  28. During my system update on asus ZenFone max I received the notification of system installed, but I mistakenly cancelled it.
Now when I update my system back again it is not showing me any notification.
    Plz guide
