Digital ID for Apple Wallet announced

Listen to article

Apple has launched a Digital ID that can be created through the Apple Wallet. It uses information from the US passport as an alternative to present an ID through iPhones or Apple Watches.

Apple says it’s a secure way for users to make an ID. As per Apple, it’s accepted at TSA checkpoints across 250 airports in the US for domestic travel. However, it’s not a replacement for a physical passport and can’t be used for international travel.

Apple says that the Digital ID will be accepted in ‘select businesses and organizations for identity and age verification’ in the future. This is slated to work in person, in apps, and online.

Data from the ID is encrypted and is stored on-device, and Apple can’t see when or where you present it. Users also don’t need to unlock or hand over their device to present the ID.

To reiterate, only information needed for the transaction is presented. Its introduction follows the option of adding a driver’s license or state ID to the Apple Wallet in 2022.

The company also added that ‘additional Digital ID acceptance use cases’ will come in the future. With the arrival of Google Pay and possible arrival of Apple Pay in the Philippines, the Digital ID could be a useful identification alternative.
Apple Wallet users can add their passport by scanning the photo page with an iPhone. From here, it reads the chip embedded to ensure its authenticity.

Users will also need to take a selfie for verification and complete a series of facial and head movements to complete setup. To use the Digital ID, double-click the side button or Home button to access your Apple Wallet.

Next, select Digital ID and hold your iPhone or Apple Watch near an ID reader. For authentication, Face ID and Touch ID are used.
