The news comes only a couple of months after Amazon revealed some 18,000 layoffs. According to Jassy, the decision to let go of additional employees came from reprioritization and uncertainties in the current economy.
“Some may ask why we didn’t announce these role reductions with the ones we announced a couple months ago. The short answer is that not all of the teams were done with their analyses in the late fall; and rather than rush through these assessments without the appropriate diligence, we chose to share these decisions as we’ve made them so people had the information as soon as possible,” said Jassy.
Interestingly, the final job cuts aren’t likely to be finalized until mid-to-late April, and the company will not inform workers up until that point.
Amazon isn’t the only big company announcing layoffs though. Last week, Meta announced that they will be laying off an additional 10,000 workers on top of the previously announced job cuts. Last year, other major tech companies also announced layoffs such as Microsoft and Google.
