Microsoft Band wearable device officially announced

The Redmond-based company has officially announced its own wearable device called the Microsoft Band which features a 1.4-inch touch screen display, water and splash resistant body, and a slew of sensors to keep track of your activities.

The Microsoft Band aims to be your fitness companion by sporting a number of sensors like an optical heart rate sensor, GPS, ambient light sensor, skin temperature sensor, and UV sensor to name a few.

In addition, it also pairs with your smartphone via Bluetooth so you can receive alerts and notifications like text messages, incoming calls, Email, and social media notifications. You can even call on Cortana if you’re using a Windows Phone 8.1 smartphone.

Debuting alongside the Microsoft Band is Microsoft Health which is a platform similar to Google Fit and Apple HealthKit. It’s a cloud-based service that provides actionable insights based on the data collected from the Microsoft Band and fitness apps you use with it.

The Microsoft Band has a price tag of $199 and works with Windows Phone, iPhone, and Android. International availability is yet to be announced.
