HUAWEI Pura80 Ultra now official

Listen to article

HUAWEI has officially launched its latest flagship lineup, the HUAWEI Pura80 Series, in China. Leading the pack is the Pura80 Ultra, which introduces a unique telephoto camera system.

Instead of using two separate camera modules, the device uses a single sensor with a “switchable tele lens” system, allowing it to shift between 3.7x and 9.4x optical zoom ranges.

The mechanism uses a moving prism to alternate between the two lenses. This is a different approach from Sony’s method, which relies on physically adjusting the lens itself. HUAWEI lists two telephoto specs: a 50MP and a 12.5MP. The zoom system uses a 1/1.28-inch sensor which is larger than what’s found in many other telephoto cameras.

The main camera is a 50MP RYYB sensor with a one-inch size and a variable aperture. The rest of the rear setup includes a 40MP ultrawide camera and a 1.5MP multi-spectral sensor, which helps with color accuracy.

Up front, there’s a 13MP wide-angle selfie camera.

Just like the previous release, however, Huawei has not specified what’s the chipset powering the Pura80 Ultra. And there’s also no mention whether it would support 5G, except it gets satellite communication.

Other key specs include a 6.8-inch OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a 5,700mAh battery, 100W wired charging, and 80W wireless charging.

It also has an IP68/IP69 rating for water and dust resistance and runs on HarmonyOS 5.1 (a.k.a. HarmonyOS NEXT) which doesn’t run Android apps.
