GCash now back to normal with new enhanced security measures

Listen to article

After yesterday’s widespread downtime of GCash 235, the company has finally restored GCash back to normal operations.

GCash has been continuously rolling out safety and security measures to prevent unsecured devices from accessing the app. While implementing this, the app remained operational but some customers may have experienced intermittent access to selected services.

As of October 9, 7:00 PM, the intermittent issues 51 have been addressed and all affected services are accessible. We assure our customers that their accounts and funds remain secure.

The latest security deployment is part of ongoing enhancements to ensure the safest and most secure experience for our customers.

Our official channels remain open and accessible for any concerns. Go to the GCash Help Center at https://help.gcash.com, and talk to Gigi.

We advise our users to never share their MPIN and One-time PIN (OTP) with anyone. GCash will never send emails or messages with links nor reach out to customers via calls and other messaging platforms.

GCash did not elaborate as to what additional security measures were put in place but we’ll look into this and update this story once we do.

Gaguhan na lang ang GCash kahit yung Developer Mode nakatago at naka-Off by default, sideloading permission ay nasa app mismo (mostly mga web browsers at file managers). Kaya yung iba napipilitan lumipat sa ibang e-wallet service (i.e. Maya, Coins.ph, GoTyme, etc.)

Dapat all transactions in GCASH must have an sms confirmation to fight scammers or unauthorized individual. This is one way of the safest way na legit ang transaction.

At least one new “feature” they’ve added is blocking app access on rooted devices, devices that have untrusted app sources enabled and even on devices with Developer Mode enabled. Presumably they’ve found that people who’ve experienced fraudulent activity sometimes have installed apps of a questionable nature, compromising their devices, so, have decided to implement a blanket block based on the availability of the tools that someone could use to install bad things as it’ll probably block more infected devices than the number of legitimate cases where these features are used. It’s quite annoying, especially the fact that they’ve gone straight to blocking, rather than warning, even with a requirement to accept responsibility for your device security, but, I’d have to assume that they determined that most of those impacted wouldn’t read a warning or would just accept responsibility without understanding what that entails.

blocking an android feature means there is a weak component in the entire system na hindi nila kaya i resolve. so to prevent na makita yung weakness na yun, they disabled the feature na pwedeng ma exploit yung weakness. why customers ang need mag adjust? e cellphone nila yun. if developers options is enabled, meaning alam mya ginagawa nya sa phone nya.

Not only rooted devices. They’ve also blocked developer mode
