Google adds warnings for battery-draining apps on Play Store

In order to identify programs that use excessive amounts of battery life, Google has implemented a new method in the Google Play Store. The update enables developers to monitor how apps keep a device’s CPU active in the background by utilizing a new measure called “Excessive Partial Wake Lock” in Android Vitals.

Apps that exceed the limit may receive Play Store listing warnings or experience reduced visibility in recommendations and search results.

The threshold is activated when a non-exempt wake lock maintains CPU operation for more than two hours during the screen-off period across more than 5% of user sessions throughout a 28-day duration.

However, certain tasks such as music playback, location access, and user-initiated uploads are exempt. The change is rolling out gradually and aims to improve battery efficiency and overall Android app quality.
