MacBook Pro models will finally adopt OLED displays—but not until 2026

Listen to article

Apple is set to finally embrace OLED displays for its MacBook Pro lineup, but the wait may continue for a couple of years.

Per Taiwanese research firm TrendForce, Apple purportedly encouraged its suppliers to scale up investments toward OLED displays designed for laptops. Just like on its iPhones, Apple’s suppliers are still expected to be either LG or Samsung or both.

The firm also claims that Apple eyes to utilize OLED panels for its MacBooks between 2026 and 2027.

To recall, the current generation of MacBook Pros use mini-LED panels. As explained in our guide “TVs: QLED vs OLED vs mini-LED”, such mini-LED panel deploys thousands of miniature LEDs in its backlight.

While this improves contrast and allows for more accurate dimming zones, OLED displays are a notch above offering deeper blacks and nearly infinite contrast ratios.

OLED panels also save on some power consumption since it has more control over individually lit pixels.

While the OLED-powered MacBook Pro is still a few years away, Apple is expected to continue refining its current lineup with incremental updates. Next year’s models are rumored to feature the next-generation Apple M5 chips, but a major redesign is unlikely until the OLED transition.
