Sony releases IMX490 5.4MP image sensor for dashcams

Sony Corporation has announced their new 1/1.55 type, 5.4MP IMX490 CMOS image sensor for automotive cameras or dashcams.

The Sony IMX490 has a 5.4MP sensor with a 2880 x 1860 resolution which allows it to capture a wider angle of view while maintaining the same resolution as with existing lower resolution sensors. It also has HDR capabilities with 120dB dynamic range and LED flicker mitigation functions so it can record videos in situations with dramatic contrast such as at the entrances and exits of tunnels.

When it comes to low-light recording, the sensor has 15% improvement conventional products and can recognize obstacles and people at a low illuminance of 0.1 lux (equivalent to moonlight).

The new Sony IMX490 CMOS image sensor for automotive cameras will ship in Japan in March 2019 for JPY 15,000.
