Xiaomi Surpasses Apple to Lead Global Wearables Market

In a significant shift within the wearable technology sector, Xiaomi has overtaken Apple to become the world’s leading wearable band vendor in the first quarter of 2025, according to Canalys. The Chinese tech giant shipped 8.7 million units during this period, marking a 44% year-over-year increase and capturing a 19% market share.

This resurgence is attributed to Xiaomi’s strategic refresh of its wearable lineup, including the Xiaomi Smart Band 9 and Redmi Band 5. These devices, known for their affordability and robust feature sets, have resonated with consumers in emerging markets, where demand for cost-effective wearables is on the rise.

Apple, previously the market leader, shipped 7.6 million units in Q1 2025, securing a 16% market share. While this represents a 5% increase from the same quarter last year, it falls short of Xiaomi’s growth. Analysts suggest that Apple’s conservative update cycle, particularly the lack of new models in its Watch SE and Ultra lines, may have contributed to its slower growth.

The global wearable band market itself has shown signs of recovery, with shipments rising 13% year-over-year to 46.6 million units in Q1 2025. This growth is largely driven by increased demand for basic wearables, which are more appealing to cost-conscious consumers.

Other notable players in the market include Huawei, which shipped 7.1 million units, and Samsung, which experienced a 74% year-over-year growth, shipping 4.9 million units. Garmin rounded out the top five with 1.8 million units shipped.

Xiaomi’s ascent underscores a broader trend in the wearables industry, where ecosystem integration and affordability are becoming key differentiators. The company’s HyperOS platform, which seamlessly connects its wearables with other devices, offers a compelling value proposition for consumers seeking a cohesive and budget-friendly tech ecosystem.

As the wearables market continues to evolve, manufacturers are increasingly focusing on developing comprehensive ecosystems and services to enhance user retention and generate recurring revenue. This shift from hardware-centric strategies to ecosystem-driven approaches is expected to shape the competitive landscape in the coming years.
