Meta is reportedly preparing to launch new Ray-Ban smart glasses designed for people who wear prescription lenses, according to recent reports. While current Ray-Ban smart glasses already allow prescription lenses, these new versions are said to be built specifically for that purpose. The devices are expected to be sold through regular eyewear stores, making them easier to access for people who already buy prescription glasses. A new Android app called Nearby Glasses alerts users if someone nearby may be wearing smart glasses that can record video. If it detects a signal linked to companies known for smart glasses, the app sends an alert to the user. Jeanrenaud said he created the app after reading reports about smart glasses being used in situations such as immigration raids and harassment cases. He also criticized the use of face recognition features in some smart glasses. For example, it could detect a Meta virtual reality headset instead of smart glasses because both devices share similar Bluetooth identifiers.
