55-inch OLED TV from LG is 4mm thin!

First time I ever saw an OLED TV was back in March 2010 when we did a tour of LG factories in South Korea. That was just a 15-inch prototype though but this one that is being shown by LG at CES 2012 is 55-inch big.

That’s what 10 months of engineering R&D can do to TV displays. And we’re talking about OLEDs here.

The most impressive part is that this giant OLED TV is only 4mm thin — less than half the thickness of the iPhone 4S.

Took this picture above of the 15-inch OLED TV in LG Korea (t’was selling for $2,700PHP 158,451INR 228,824EUR 2,571CNY 19,651+ a piece in Europe then). That’s how 4mm thin it looks like.

Of course, this OLED TVs won’t really see wide commercial release anytime soon (although a limited release of these units is said to be sold at $10,000PHP 586,855INR 847,498EUR 9,523CNY 72,783 a pop). OLEDs are still very expensive so maybe it’ll take the next 5 to 10 years for it to become mainstream?

  1. Hey,Sir Yuga.Wake up.It,s getting wild there at the CES 2012.New phones from Sony(with no ericcson),HTC,Nokia,etc..We’re pretty excited to know more about them…

  2. Cute technology, but not too practical for home use. At that thickness, all you need is a wayward child with heavy hands. Or an overzealous maid/cleaning lady. You’re practically forced to stick it onto a wall for its own safety. :P

  3. LG = Laging Ginagawa (sirain kasi!)

kelan kaya maglalabas ang apple ng sariling LCD TV…

  4. 5 to 10 years is way to long. I guess it would only take 2-3 years for OLEDs to be mainstreamed or who knows, maybe by 2013, OLED TV will be much affordable compared to today’s price. IMHO

  5. @applefanboy
too bad iphone’s 4 so called retina display was made by LG

  6. grabeng nipis naman yan. ang astig naman talaga ng LG pagdating sa screens. i really love our IPS screens napakaganda ng kulay :)

  7. OLED screens are pretty nice but they are very very inconsistent in screen brightness, IPS is still the way to go when it comes to TV screens. Even samsung cant perfectly produce OLED screens at 4~8″ in size.

The clarity on that TV must be stunning!
