I have had several discussions with people wanting to choose the better of two forum software — InvisionBoard (IPB) or vBulletin (vB). First off, both forum apps requires a paid license.
IPB has a one-year license of $70 (you only get upgardes for 1 year) or a perpetual license of $185 (you get all future upgrades) while vB requires an owned license for $160 but you need to pay $30 annually to get continued upgrades. Do the math and it’s clear that IPB is the much cheaper alternative. But why do we need licensed forums when there are tons of other freewares like phpBB? Well, with paid licenses, you are entitled to support and you expect your app to run smoothly and bug-free while all patches are made available fast. It’s a form of security insurance. And vB being in the forefront of the forum development dozens and dozens of plugins or modules have been developed including themes and templates.
Of the two, vBulletin is already on it’s 3rd major release while IPB has just turned 2. In terms of functionality and scalability, VB has the edge — you can scale it down to almost full-text content or soup it up and run all sorts of additional plugins, modules and hacks.
