Listen to article

The Department of Transportation has approved the price hike for Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) effective on April 2.

The new pricing scheme projects high fares for those who purchase single-journey tickets. From its current price of PHP 15.00, it’ll increase to PHP 20. As per the maximum fare of PHP 45.00, it will be priced at PHP 55.00.

For passengers who have their beep cards, the minimum fare is PHP 16.00 while the maximum fare increases to PHP 52.00. Passengers who use stored value “Beep” cards will pay somewhat less.

Enrico R. Benipayo, The President/CEO of Light Rail Manila Corporation, shared his statement regarding the adjustment of fares for the public “Public transport is a service that requires continuous investment in maintenance, upgrades, and expansion. Countries with world-class transport systems such as Singapore and Japan adjust fares regularly to keep services efficient and safe,”

He also added “In the past ten (10) years of operating and maintaining the 40-year-old railway line, this will only be the second time that LRMC has been allowed to implement fare adjustments for LRT-1. LRMC has since introduced new trains, station upgrades, and better service efficiency. Last November 2024, LRMC also completed Phase 1 of the Cavite Extension Project and opened the extension for commercial operations,”.

With the newly opened Cavite Extension, this is the second time LRMC has increased and adjusted the transportation fare for commuters.
